My Stepsister Returned To Rewrite Fate But I Became Luna (Chloe) novel Chapter 98

Chapter 98

Chloe’s POV

I stepped out of my bedroom and stumbled. Before I could fall back, Alpha Paul caught me by my arm and straightened me. “Easy there. If my son finds out you got hurt on my watch, I will never hear the end of it.”

As he let me go, I stepped back into my bedroom. “What is it, sir? Is there a problem that you came to see me so early in the morning?”

Alpha Paul’s arms were crossed over his chest. “I had my people do some digging and found out some very interesting things. Do you have any connection to the mystery pill that can wake coma patients floating around high society?”

My hands clenched into tight fists as I turned over his words in my head. Was he mad? I had no way to tell.

What did I say to him that would get him out of my room as quickly as possible?

“Chloe, you are the future Luna of Everdeen. What do you think it looks like when people find out that you were taking help from Moonflame in the way that you are?” His eyes were sharp. “I am hearing stories that the young Alpha of Moonflame has come to adore you, is that true?”

He stepped even closer. “Is this pack not good enough for you that your decision is to find somewhere else to get your work done? I am even hearing you put up the Alpha and Luna of Moonflame as your sponsors so no one would be able to touch your money.”

Crap. I was going to be punished. Was there no way out of this?

That was when a thought occurred to my mind. I took a step towards the door connecting me to Axel’s room without thinking. Alpha Paul froze, his voice lowering to a whisper. “What are you doing?”

I simply threw my weight against the door, making a sound that was loud enough to wake any decent wolf from sleep. Alpha swore as I continued staring up at him, my body trembling.

The door behind me flew open and I fell right onto Axel’s chest. My mate’s worry instantly turned to anger as he glared at his father.

“Might I ask, Father, what in the Goddess’ name you are doing here?” Axel hissed slowly.

“You little brat!” his father snapped at me and I turned into Axel’s body. Axel cooperated and put his arms around me protectively, tucking me into his embrace.

His father swore as he glared at Axel. “I was only trying to talk to her, not…whatever it is that you are thinking.”

“What kind of conversation ends with Chloe trembling like a leaf? I have seen her look you and Alphas older than you dead in the eye and say what she wants to say. What exactly did you tell her?”

Thinking now in hindsight, Alpha Paul really did not say anything too serious. However, because of the way it was phrased and with the Crane family’s to-be-determined punishment at the back of my mind, it had started to sound like I was treasonous against the pack.

I tried to pull back from Axel. “Axel, maybe I was overreacting-”

“No,” he said firmly and then cupped my cheek. “I know you, darling. You would never use this door to wake me up if you did not think you were in danger.” He paused and looked over his shoulder at my father. “It is a real pity that the danger is coming from my own father.”

“Axel Everdeen,” his father hissed slowly. “You believe this little girl over me?”

Considering the number of promises from my childhood that still remain unfulfilled till today,” Axel snapped back with a disrespectful level of sass. “Yes, Father, I am likely to believe my future wife over you. She might be secretive but at least, she does not lie.”

Now, Axel was trying to get the two of us killed. If Jax spoke to his father the same way that Axel was speaking to. Alpha Paul, even my mother and David would be implicated.

I tugged on Axel’s sleeve, trying to hide behind him. “Don’t worry, Chloe. He will not do anything to you,” Axel reassured me, glaring at his father.

After a long moment, Alpha Paul sighed. “I was going to call you two later to remind you about your mating ceremony.”

My hands went slack against Axel. Our…what?

Axel tensed slightly in that same way. Alpha Paul noticed and looked at me. “Are you not turning eighteen in a few weeks? I was thinking that we get ahead and start planning the birthday banquet and the ceremony at the same time.”

I had been so busy with all the things I had to handle that I did not notice the passage of time. It felt like just yesterday when Axel found me in those woods and asked him to be his temporary fiancee.

“Understood, Father,” Axel said and Alpha Paul nodded, his eye twitching with irritation as he left the room.

When the door shut behind him, I stepped out of Axel’s embrace, shuffling my feet awkwardly. “Sorry for bothering you. I just thought…I thought he was going to do something to me because of the whole thing with Moonflame.”

“No, it’s alright,” he said softly. “I would prefer that you come to me if you are afraid of anything. I do exist to protect you.”
