"Mr. Langford, there are rooms," Christian assumed his boss had misheard, so he repeated himself clearly.
"Ask again. Tell them we'll pay double to see if anyone is willing to give up their room," Lucian instructed smoothly.
"??"
"It doesn't have to be a penthouse, but are you telling me there's absolutely nothing left?"
Christian fell silent.
He had worked under Lucian for five years and had seen every kind of crisis imaginable, but in this exact moment, he was genuinely lost.
The hotel had rooms. He had literally just confirmed it. There were even two premium penthouses still available.
Why was his boss insisting there weren't any?
"Mr. Langford, do you mean..." Christian asked tentatively.
"I mean you need to ask the front desk if any guests are willing to check out early. Price is no object," Lucian replied with a perfectly calm tone. "You need to secure a room tonight, no matter what."
"And if you can't manage it, don't even think about your bonus this month."
It clicked.
Christian hadn't survived this long by being dense.
His boss didn't need a room. His boss just didn't want to sleep alone.
"Understood, Mr. Langford. I'll go negotiate right now," Christian said, hanging up with impeccable tact.
Lucian tucked his phone away and turned to Seraphina, his expression unreadable.
Seraphina looked at him in confusion. "They're fully booked?"
"Yeah," Lucian lied without missing a beat. "The hotel says they're at max capacity because of the summit."
Seraphina frowned. "A hotel this size, how could they..."
Usually, hotels held back inventory. Even when they claimed to be full, there were almost always a couple of emergency rooms left.
"Peak season," Lucian provided succinctly.
Seraphina thought about it. It wasn't entirely impossible.
This was Crestview's most popular business hotel, and with the massive influx of attendees for today's summit, it made sense they'd be packed to the rafters.
"Then where are you going to sleep tonight?" she asked.
Lucian just looked at her, saying absolutely nothing.
His intense stare made the hairs on her arms stand up.
