She was finally jolted awake by the shrill ringing of her phone.
Fumbling blindly across the nightstand, she managed to hit the answer button. Eleanor's frantic, worried voice instantly flooded through the speaker. "Seraphina, Evie started running a fever last night."
Seraphina froze, the last traces of sleep vanishing instantly.
She pushed herself up into a sitting position, though her head felt incredibly heavy and groggy, perhaps from oversleeping.
Her temples throbbed slightly.
"Grandma, try not to panic. Tell me exactly what's going on. Has the doctor seen her? Did she take any medicine?"
Eleanor eagerly answered her rapid-fire questions: "The family doctor came and prescribed medication, but she absolutely refuses to take it. She just keeps crying for Lucian."
"I tried calling him a few minutes ago, but he didn't pick up, so I called you."
Seraphina immediately understood the subtext of the call.
Even though she didn't say it outright, Eleanor was desperately hoping Seraphina would intervene and persuade Lucian to come home and check on his sister.
"Grandma, Lucian is probably caught up in a meeting," Seraphina reassured her softly.
She paused, then added, "How about this? I'll call Christian Chase right now and see what his schedule looks like."
"Oh, thank goodness. Yes, please do. I trust you to handle this."
Eleanor finally hung up.
Still clutching her phone, Seraphina rubbed her aching temples.
Little Bean's voice echoed in her head. "Why do you adults have to communicate in such exhausting, roundabout ways?"
Seraphina managed a tired smile. "We don't have a choice. That's just how the adult world works."
Little Bean scoffed. "Being an adult sounds terrible. I am officially canceling my subscription to growing up."
"Just go to sleep, sweetheart."
Little Bean huffed. "..."
Whenever Mommy didn't want to talk, she always told him to go to sleep.
Seraphina dialed Christian's number, and he picked up almost instantly.
"Mrs. Langford. Mr. Langford is in the middle of a meeting, but I can hand him the phone right now."
Seraphina hesitated. "Wait... if it's an urgent meeting, I can wait until he's finished..."
"It's completely fine," Christian insisted warmly. "Mr. Langford made it explicitly clear that absolutely nothing is more important than your calls."
