The man stood entirely motionless.
Seraphina took a few steps back, gathering momentum before launching a flying kick straight at him.
The man clearly hadn't expected Seraphina to be so formidable. Unable to dodge in time, he took the full force of the blow.
He crashed heavily onto the concrete.
Seizing the moment, Seraphina yanked the stroller toward her and ripped back the canopy. "Little Bean, don't be afraid, Mommy is here to..."
Her voice abruptly died in her throat.
There was no Little Bean inside. Only a balloon, rapidly expanding in size!
With a deafening *pop*, the balloon exploded right in her face.
Seraphina instinctively covered her nose and mouth, but she was a second too late.
She had already inhaled a faint trace of the unknown chemical gas.
Her vision faded to pitch black as she collapsed onto the ground.
In the split second before she lost consciousness entirely, she heard Little Bean cry out for her one last time.
When Tiffany finally dashed out of the mall, she saw nothing but a lone stroller abandoned in the middle of the street.
Seraphina was nowhere to be found.
Approaching with trembling hands, she pulled back the shade and found Little Bean sobbing uncontrollably.
"Godmother, where's Mommy? I called for her, I told her exactly where I was! Why didn't she come find me? Why isn't she answering?"
"Godmother, where did Mommy go?"
Aside from Seraphina, no one could hear Little Bean's telepathic pleas.
All anyone else heard were his deafening, heartbroken wails.
Terrified by the baby's sudden, hysterical crying, Tiffany tried desperately to soothe him, but nothing worked.
With shaking fingers, she dialed Lucian's number. "Mr. Langford... Sera... she's missing... Someone pushed Little Bean's stroller away, and she chased after them..."
"We found Little Bean, but Sera is gone!"
Lucian's heart stopped beating for a full second. He violently shoved his chair back and bolted toward the door.
