The reply came almost instantly.
"Orders are executed immediately upon receipt and cannot be canceled. Furthermore, you have violated Article 7 of the Game Rules, which strictly prohibits retracting an order during a live operation. Your account is now frozen."
Evie froze in sheer terror. She desperately typed another message: "You can't do this, I paid you!"
But when she hit send, a red exclamation point appeared. She had been blocked. The message wouldn't go through!
With a loud thud, the phone slipped from her trembling fingers and crashed onto the floor.
The noise caught Eleanor's attention, and she turned to look at her granddaughter. "Evie, are you alright?"
Evie shook her head, the color draining entirely from her face. "I... I'm fine. I guess I'm just still recovering."
"Oh dear, I shouldn't have made you come downstairs. Hurry back up to bed and get some rest."
"I need to call your brother and figure out exactly what's going on."
Upon hearing this, Evie suddenly perked up in a panic. "Yes, right, call Lucian first! Let's see what the situation is."
Eleanor looked at Evie in utter bewilderment, her lips pressing together. "You..."
Since when did Evie care so much about Seraphina's well-being? This was completely out of character.
"Grandma," Evie stammered guiltily, scrambling to change the subject. "No matter what, Seraphina is still part of the Langford family. If something happens to her and it tanks the company's stock price, wouldn't my year-end dividends take a hit?"
So that was it.
With that explanation, her sudden concern made perfect sense to Eleanor.
Eleanor dialed Lucian's number. "Lucian, the woman on the news... was that Seraphina?"
The older woman's voice trembled slightly.
Evie stood nearby, leaning heavily against the sofa to support her weak legs as she eavesdropped on the conversation.
"Grandma, don't believe the videos online. It's just baseless gossip," Lucian's exhausted voice echoed through the speaker.
Eleanor wasn't buying it for a second. "Fine then. If it's just gossip, put Seraphina on the phone right now."
A heavy silence fell on Lucian's end of the line.
Eleanor scoffed coldly. "You really thought you could lie to me!"
She paused, her tone softening slightly. "Is Little Bean alright?"
