"I was wondering what you were going to say," Melody said, a confident smile finally breaking through. "Don't worry. I can handle the pressure."
"Besides, I have the skills to enter the national research institute. There's no way I can't handle a corporate project."
Landon nodded. "I'm glad you see it that way."
He paused before asking, "Do you want to grab dinner? My treat."
Melody was tempted, but she shook her head. "Not tonight. I have things to take care of. Let's take a raincheck."
Before Landon could even respond, she put the car in drive and sped off.
As she drove, she glanced at the rearview mirror.
Landon was still standing there, watching her car disappear down the street.
Her lips curled upward. Her mood had vastly improved.
Upstairs in the Langford Group building, Christian Chase stood by the window, watching Melody drive away before turning back to Lucian.
"Mr. Langford, Melody is gone."
Lucian didn't look up from his documents. He simply gave a faint hum and ordered, "Call Seraphina. Tell her to come up for lunch."
Christian nodded, took a few steps, then turned back. "Mr. Langford, are you really not worried?"
"You have to use bait to catch the wolf," Lucian said, casually spinning an expensive pen between his fingers. "Landon has been in constant contact with York Zeller recently. Now he's pushing this Stream Alpha and Beta split. They're making their move."
"If I don't give them an opening, they'll just keep scheming in the shadows and cause me even more headaches. I might as well hand them the rope to hang themselves with."
Christian nodded in understanding. Landon and his allies thought they were winning, completely unaware they were walking straight into the trap Lucian had set.
"Also, Mr. Langford, the plan you and Mrs. Langford put into motion is working. York Zeller took the bait. It won't be long before it blows up in his face."
As they spoke, Seraphina answered the phone, her voice cool and composed.
"Hello?"
"Sweetheart, have you eaten yet?"
