I froze, taking a moment to catch my breath before opening the message. I didn’t think I’d feel this way after finally hearing from him again.

“You might want to take it easy right now,” Lyra said, getting closer and placing her hands on my shoulders as she pushed me down on my bed so I could sit. “If you keep going like this, your heart will explode.”

“I just…it’s really Max.” My voice was quiet, still shocked that when I thought of giving up, it was then that he made his presence known.

“Well, don’t just sit still and stare at the screen. What does the message say?” she asked.

I blinked a few times, realizing she was right about that.

I pressed my lips together just so I could hide my smile, but it barely did anything for me. I just couldn’t hide how thrilled I was.

Then, it all came crashing down when I opened the message and read it. Not only did it shatter my hopes, it also left me so confused that I furrowed my eyebrows.

“Well? Are you going to tell me what it says or is this the part where I become invasive?” Lyra poked my arm with her pointy nail.

“It’s just… a dot.”

“What? A dot?”

I nodded, unable to relax the creases on my forehead.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” she asked. “Did you two have a secret language or something?”

“No. That’s why I don’t understand why he would send me something like this. It makes absolutely no sense.”

“You’re right about that. I rarely use phones but it would be so weird for someone to just send me a dot.”

Frustrated, I tossed my phone aside and huffed. “To be honest, I would’ve preferred that he sent me nothing. What the hell am I supposed to do with a dot?”

I lowered my head, feeling like Max was just playing tricks on me. Wherever he was, I believed he enjoyed leaving me in a state where I had to guess what was going on. What a jerk.

“Hey,” Lyra said, her voice gentle. “You obviously have a lot of questions for Max. The bright side is that he’s finally texted you after weeks. You’ll get your answers from him soon, but it won’t be easy.”

“What are you talking about?” I leaned forward.

“When the time comes, you’ll know.”

“But-”

“Just wait and see as it all unfolds.”

“Is there something you’re not telling me?”

“What could I possibly hide from you?” She forced a chuckle. “Just be happy that Max is back.”

“I don’t know how to feel, but one thing is for sure, he’s definitely far from here. Otherwise, I would’ve felt his presence.”

“Good. Now that you’re happy-”

“Who says I’m happy?” I turned defensive.

“Come on. You’re a little relieved that you heard from him.”

“With just a dot?” I shook my head.

“Okay, that was crazy of him to send, but enough of that. It’s now 10 PM. Get ready and let’s go.”

“Wait, what was it you wanted to tell me about Max?”

“Just that he was seen around. I know you hadn’t yet heard of this because had it been the case, you would have been the one to tell me. For the second time, enough of this. Get changed and let’s get to training.”

At 2 AM, I sat up in a tree, trying to catch my breath. Lyra had teleported us back to Raven Mist, right around my usual training spot.

A few hours ago, my clothes were still in their best form but after four hours of training, they were ripped and covered in sweat and dirt.

“That was quite hard on me,” I admitted, watching Lyra as she stayed afloat while facing me.

“What did you expect? I told you how you need to train like never before if you intended to compete with the best. This is also what you need to begin finding a balance between you and Saga but to be honest, it might take a while. I almost thought you’d lose control there when I broke the seal just a little.”

“And yet that was all it took for her to fight her way through it so she could rise to the surface. If you ask me-”

“I’m not asking,” she interrupted me.

“Anyway, we should’ve started this a long time ago, but you just wanted to deal with Max first.”

“Hey, I changed my mind, okay? This has been going according to plan and breaking the seal just a little bit right now was the perfect thing to do.”

“What do you mean?” I narrowed my eyes with curiosity.

“Don’t think I forgot.”

“Huh?”

“Close your eyes.”

Wondering what she was up to, I closed my eyes.

Then, I flinched as a reflex when she held my hand.

“Just relax,” she said to me.

While I kept my eyes closed, I sensed several familiar scents all in one place as Lyra opened a door and I confirmed it when she told me to open my eyes.

“Happy birthday!”

Cheers erupted in my father’s living room and not only were my parents and brothers present, but all those who belonged to the Moon Frost Pack.

Realizing I was in the presence of so many, I panicked and remembered I looked like a mess so I looked down at myself, only to find that I was all cleaned up with my clothes in perfect shape. This was all because of Lyra and I just wanted to thank her, but she was already gone so I could be with my family.

As we all celebrated, one statement frequently came up, that I was finally eighteen and would soon find my mate. I seemed to be so dismissive of that, but it was the one thing everyone was looking forward to.

During my family’s interactions, I noticed that Cole kept his distance from my father and when they would talk, he seemed to force himself to smile. It was then I realized what I didn’t know all along and I thought I’d talk to him in private, so I brought him outside just for some fresh air.

As soon as we were alone, my brother gently wrapped his arm around the back of my neck and pulled me closer for a hug.

“You might be eighteen, but you’re still my little sister.”

I chuckled. “That’s just something I’ll have to learn to live with. Can I ask you something?”

He sighed. “I know what you’re going to say because you’ve been watching me.”

“Then explain it to me, only if you don’t mind.”

“It was so easy for you and Dylan to forgive dad that day but it wasn’t the same for me. It still isn’t. I want my relationship with him to be the way it was before but I just don’t see it happening. I still need more time.”

“That’s why dad has been so tolerant. He knows exactly how you feel.”

“I really looked up to him.”

“I know. Just take your time.”

“We better get back inside before you’re taken away from us.”

I chuckled, holding his hand as we returned to everyone else.

One of the best parts about having Lyra in my life was that I no longer had to worry about being late.

It was 8 in the morning and I was back at Ash Claw High, sitting on my bed while reading all about its history when a message notification caught my attention. I instantly tossed the book aside just so I could read the message, hoping it was from Max and this time, not just a dot. I still couldn’t understand what he meant by

that.

Upon reading the message, I pouted before smiling. It wasn’t Max, but Gina with a beautiful message. I placed a hand on my chest, comparing last birthday when I had no friends at Blackbolt High, to that now being a different case.

I replied to her message, then picked up the book and continued to read. I was only a few paragraphs in when Phoebe and Sally walked in and they gasped at the sight of me.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

“You’re back.,” they said in unison.

“Uh…yeah.”

“Had fun sneaking out?” Phoebe wiggled her eyebrows.

“What?”

They giggled, coming to join me on my bed as Sally playfully rolled her eyes. “Oh, come on. You don’t have to pretend. You weren’t here during the night. You obviously joined the others who went to have some fun.”

“Whoa! That’s definitely not what happened.”

“Then where were you?” Phoebe narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

“I was…I was… celebrating my birthday.”

“What? It’s your birthday?” Their faces brightened up even more.

“Yes it is.”

“Why didn’t you mention it before?” Sally excitedly leaned forward.

“I didn’t think you’d be interested. You and I aren’t really close,” I reminded them.

Phoebe nodded. “You’re right, but that doesn’t mean we’re enemies. We’re even on the same team.”

“Yeah, but that’s only for now. This will turn competitive and all that will be thrown out of the window.”

Proudly placing a hand on her chest, Sally said, “When that time comes, we’ll be ready. I’m just glad you’re back. We need to be in our matching uniforms for the welcome ceremony at 12 PM today.”

“I still can’t believe we are going to the Academy of Warriors today.” Phoebe clapped with excitement, looking right at Sally.

“I just can’t wait to finally set my eyes on the Lycan King. I’ve only heard stories about him. Do you really think it’s true that his sons will be there?”

“It better be. From what I heard around, they’re absolutely gorgeous!”

Apart from gushing over the Lycan princes they hadn’t even yet met, Phoebe and Sally expressed their desire to make it through to the end and have their abilities recognized so they could serve the Lycan King. If only they knew just how ruthless he was.

“We better get ready early this time. Last time, the guys complained about us,” I reminded them.

“We’ll make it!”

Just as we began to talk about the other contestants from the schools in close proximity to the palace and the Academy of Warriors, I picked up Ruby’s scent and her footsteps got louder. She was obviously coming to the room and I smirked, getting more comfortable and sitting in such a way that my whole torso was in full view to show off the orange shirt I had on.

“Ugh!” she said as we walked in. “I was wondering why it smelled like shit in here and now it all makes s- what?”

She stopped in her tracks, her eyes scanning my top half and not bothering to look at Phoebe and Sally.

“What are you looking at? Never seen an orange shirt before?” I smirked.

“But, how is this possible?” She gritted her teeth.

“What are you talking about?” I shrugged.

She sneered. “Whatever tricks you’re playing, I’ll get you for this!”

“Are we missing something here?” Sally asked.

“Shut the fuck up!” she yelled, storming out and slamming the door.

Curious, the two girls turned to me for answers and I shrugged.

“Don’t even ask. I also don’t know what’s going on with Ruby.”

I pressed my lips together as I continued reading, thankful to Lyra that I had the opportunity to shock Ruby by showing her my orange shirt back in one piece.

Even as the hours went by, I still couldn’t stop thinking about it. If only I could tell Gina, I was certain she would’ve been rolling on the floor, but I couldn’t. She still knew nothing about my powers.

Ten minutes before 12 PM, we arrived at the Academy of Warriors and everything about the premises was

unlike anything I had ever seen before. It was a state of the art with towering structures only fit for the elites. There was a mix of scholars and those who seemed like they were about to go out on a mission. Everything was a marvel to look at.

As I stopped in my tracks and looked up at one of the skyscrapers, Ruby pushed me from behind.

“Keep moving!” she yelled. “Never seen something so beautiful before?”

Everyone around us chuckled, including those from other schools.

This was obviously her attempt to get back at me after what she did to my shirt didn’t go as planned, but I chose not to respond.

The arena was four times the size of any arena I had been to and the welcome ceremony was filled with musical performances that were mixed with a few matches between wolves. The amount of raw strength and power had the audience cheering.

Even I was completely captivated by it all, but that changed when the arrival of the Lycan King and his family was announced.

Everyone wondered where they would come from and then suddenly, the ground began to rumble and the sound of machinery whirring filled the air. Then, the middle of the ground opened up, the crowd gasping as the Lycan King and his Luna emerged from the ground, standing on a golden stage which rose higher and higher until it reached its full height only a few meters away from me.

While the audience continued to cheer and pay their respects, the ground rumbled again and two heads emerged. The moment their faces were in full view, the crowd erupted in more cheers. As for me, the air left my lungs and my jaw dropped in shock at the sight of Tyler and right next to him, Max, both of them dressed in the finest clothing only fit for royalty.
