Chapter 27
Chapter 27
Addison

The stage continued to rise, Max and Tyler towering above the crowd, their presence commanding attention just like their parents.
Sally and Phoebe, who were next to me, couldn’t stop screaming, but it wasn’t really because they felt betrayed, they were thrilled that they had interacted with royalty before.
Everyone I knew seemed to react the same way, except me. I felt like I was in a dream, my mind racing with questions.
Max was a Lycan Prince? How could this be?
Usually, I’d sense him and feel uncomfortable if he was at a certain distance. How had I not sensed him this time around when he was right underground?
Looking up at him as his eyes scanned the crowd, I clenched my jaw when his gaze locked onto mine just for a few seconds before looking away like he didn’t know me at all. It was the last thing I expected and it wasn’t any different with Tyler. The stages only made it more obvious in describing what my relationship was like with them. They were unreachable.
I thought back to all my encounters with them and how they lied to my face.
Even though it seemed Max wouldn’t look at me again, my gaze was still locked onto his, shaking my head in disbelief.
Their brief appearance came to an end when the ground opened up again and the stages they were on began to lower. Just once, I wished he’d look at me in the hopes that I’d see some guilt in his eyes, but not once did he look in my direction and just like that, he was gone. I couldn’t even sense him anymore.
The host had a few announcements to make, but that didn’t stop my schoolmates from whispering to each other about Max and Tyler.
Ruby didn’t even seem to care as she smirked, as if already coming up with a plan. I may not have known what exactly it was, but I could tell she was up to something.
The welcome ceremony was over but that wasn’t the end of the conversation about the appearance of the royal family. I noticed it was mostly those from Blackbolt High who couldn’t stop talking about it. Everyone from the other schools didn’t seem so shocked, especially the ones near the palace. Did they already know that Max and Tyler were the Lycan Princes?
Back in the room assigned to us while it was still empty, the betrayal in my heart made me face the wall, curl up on the bed and close my eyes. How could this happen to me?
My phone kept buzzing with messages from Gina and Aunt Nora, both expressing their shock of finding out about Max and how he was actually royalty. Too hurt to even begin typing, I put the phone aside, hoping I could close my eyes and wake up to find out that it was all just a dream, but I knew it wasn’t. I could hear

voices from outside talking about it and Saga was in distress.

Just then, I also began to wonder why Max came to Blackbolt High. Was it a trap for me? I couldn’t help but be paranoid after what I knew about my father’s history with Warrick.
I
may not have felt like talking to Gina, but I still needed to talk to Aunt Nora who knew about everything that was going on.
She was in the company of my brothers, who still knew nothing of what was going on but they could sense how upset I was.
As soon as I was close enough, I threw myself in her arms and buried my face in her chest, trying so hard not to burst into tears. I didn’t know it would hurt that much.
“It’s okay, my child,” she said, her voice gentle.
“Can someone tell us what we’re missing here?” Dylan said.
“Yeah, who hurt our sister?” Cole chimed in. “Tell us and we’ll deal with them!”
Breaking the hug, I sighed in defeat. “There’s nothing you can do about it. This has to do with the Lycan Prince, Max.”
“What?” They asked in unison, their eyes going round.
Pulling myself together, I told them all about what had been going on between Max and I and they were anything but pleased.
“So, this guy lied to you and he turned out to be a Lycan Prince?” Cole smacked his lips. “Shouldn’t we be worried? What if this was the plan all along to get to know you before capturing you?”
“You’re thinking too far ahead. He didn’t know the truth about me,” I said.
Cole scoffed. “Even if that’s true, he obviously knows it now.”
“Addie,” Aunt Nora said. “I’m sorry but I had to tell your parents. I couldn’t keep this from them, knowing who you’ve been dealing with. There’s so much happening right now.”
I stepped away from Aunt Nora so I could stand on my own and crossed my arms, listening to Cole express his concern. In the blink of an eye, Lyra appeared in front of me, placed her hand on my shoulder and when I blinked again, I was deep in the forest with her.
“Hey!” I looked all around. “Why did you bring me here just like that?”
“Why else would I bring you here?” She rolled her eyes as she fixed her long black coat. “I know about what happened at the welcome ceremony.”
“Of course you do.”
She sighed. “The fact that this happened on your birthday made it quite an unexpected and interesting surprise. It’s just too bad you had to find out like that.”

I suspiciously narrowed my eyes. “Why does it sound like you knew about this?”
Looking down at her long nails, she casually said, “Because I did.”
“What? Seriously?”
“Yup. I’ve known all along. Even my mother knew.” She circled around me.
“And you never said anything to me?”
“Look, it wasn’t our place to say it, alright?”
I may not have known Lyra for very long, but it hurt that she did something like that to me.

“Do you mean to tell me that this whole time, you’ve just been toying with me, making fun of how I still couldn’t find Max when you knew where he was?”
“Yup. When you and I first met, I thought he’d return to Blackbolt High but as the days went by, I began to realize he wouldn’t show up. That’s the main reason I no longer made it a priority to find out about the strange force between you two, but you weren’t supposed to know that.”
“I feel so stupid.”
“Well, had I been in your shoes, I’d feel stupid, too.”
She was obviously mocking me, But I didn’t have it in me to focus on that.
“I don’t understand how I didn’t sense him when he arrived at the arena before that stage was even exposed to the audience.”
“My mother and I aren’t the only witches around.”
Too hurt to even speak once again, I dropped to my knees.
“Hey,” she said, showing me a list of what was to come in the competition as she crouched down in front of me. “The final round is a battle while in wolf form, which needs a lot of work in your case. Now, you can either dwell on Max being a Lycan Prince, or get your ass up and let’s get to work.”
I closed my eyes, Saga and I feeling the same way. It was heartbreaking to find out the truth about Max, but I joined the competition because I wanted to do this for myself and reach my full potential. With that in mind, I rose to my feet and stretched my neck.
“I’m ready.”
“Good. Let’s go.”
That late afternoon, I trained harder than ever before under Lyra’s guidance, blocking Max out as much as possible. It was just as she had said, the competition was now different as it required more than what I had been exposed to before. I intended to do my best.
Around 9 PM, my training came to an end and I sprawled out on the ground, facing the night sky while

“You did great today. You’re definitely stronger and that’s what I need for you to be able to manipulate nature’s
elements.”
“Seriously, when will you teach me that?” I sat up, wiping the sweat off my forehead.
“Soon.”
“That’s what you keep saying.” I shook my head.
“Look, it would’ve been great if this happened after I figured out what’s going on with you and Max, but he’s not just someone I can walk up to.”
“Now I understood what you meant when you said if only he’d come to me and not the other way around.”
Just then, my phone’s buzzing caught my attention, making me wonder if Gina sent me another text asking if I was alright since I had barely texted her back each time.
As soon as I saw the sender’s name and the message itself, I chuckled in disbelief.
Max: “We need to talk.”
