Chapter 78
Max
Pike Hill had always been on higher ground compared to other places, but the violent currents had managed to make their way into the palace, which was the highest point.
I’d climbed the oldest and tallest tree within the palace, its roots running so deep and strong that not even the currents could sweep it away. I’d stayed in it for as long as I had to.
By the time the crashing waves were gone, the damage had already been done. The gardens had been uprooted, statues ripped clean in half and the main gates twisted inward.
The front yard that had been clear just about ten minutes earlier, now had a mix of golden plates from the kitchen, broken chairs, jewelry, flags, clothes, shards of glass and shoes. Adding to the mix was the mud draining sluggishly from one of the broken windows in the mansion.
From that height in the tree, I could also see far and wide, the situation outside the palace not being so different. Not only had some houses been washed away, the roads had been blocked with all kinds of broken furniture and I even spotted a hand buried in all of it.
The sorrowful cries in the streets were hard to block out as they were everywhere. It was still a sunny day, but it felt like there was nothing but darkness.
While I was deeply focused on the damage that had been left behind, I was more concerned about Addison. As far as I knew, she’d lost control and let Saga surge more than ever before. It was the only way she’d been able to command such power. I could feel the rage in the wind and currents.
I was the only one who could calm her down when in that state, but I was too far away. It made me wonder what had happened after the wind went still and the violent currents came to a stop. How had she managed to get herself under control? These were questions that I knew I wouldn’t get answers to.
The drenched royal guards had been waiting for me to get down from the tree. They’d aligned themselves in such a way that I could step on their backs until I’d get to the steps leading inside the mansion, but the inside was just as bad as the outside and getting covered in dirt was the least of my concerns. I wasn’t even about to use them in that way. I wasn’t my father.
After dismissing them all, I began to get down slowly, my shoes sinking into the mud until my ankles were submerged.
Then, I began heading towards the entrance, watching my step as the mud had turned the ground into a slippery slope.
I was on the way to the steps when I stepped on something that squeaked, making me stop in my tracks. I shoved my hand in the mud just to see what it was and when I had it, I used my thumb to get rid of the mud as much as I could. When I could see the red color, I realized it was a child’s toy. There were no children in the palace. It had to have come from out there and made its way uphill through all that current. Was the child still alive? I wondered.
Even if the palace was the highest point in the entire kingdom, it was also the one place that had the worst impact, just as Addison had wanted it to be. I thought the outside was bad, but the inside was worse than I thought.
I came to my bedroom and the damage had left the once beautiful view unrecognizable. No one had been spared.
The doors of my wardrobe were barely holding on to the hinges, my entire closet a complete mess.
Just as I walked over to it, I sensed Tyler. He had just returned. I hadn’t been too worried about him because had anything awful happened to him, I would’ve felt it.
I was holding up one of my favorite shirts that now had a black stain when he came in and spoke from behind me.
“Please tell me you have an idea why this happened,” he said, stepping over the broken mug cup as he came towards me.

“After Jess was humiliated by our parents, I took her far away from Pike Hill. We were on the south side when I felt the vibrations in the ground, like something was moving fast and when I got a glimpse of it after finding the highest point in that area, it seemed so targeted, I just didn’t know it would stop right here, like this was meant to be its destination: This will definitely take a week to clean up. You don’t look like a complete mess. Just your shoes. How come?”
I came to the window, staring at the shattered glass way below outside. “I was in that old tree. This is all because of me?
“What do you mean?” he asked as he stood beside me.
After giving him a breakdown of everything that happened, he placed his hand on my shoulder
“You shouldn’t blame yourself for this. You had no choice.”
“Does that make a difference?” I pushed his hand off my shoulder with annoyance. “In the end, it still happened because of the role I played. Maybe I should’ve stayed away from Addison from the beginning. We wouldn’t be in this mess right now.”
“Hey, don’t say that. We both know that you were meant to be together. I gotta be honest, I had no idea that she could do this.”
“I don’t think she could. This was the first time.”
“Do you think mom and dad know what caused this?”
“They have to.”
“Find it! Why is everyone being so useless?” my mother’s snarl echoed from the hallway.
“What’s up with her?” Tyler asked.
“She’s been looking for every piece of her jewelry. The same goes for Dad. They seem to have lost everything valuable in this whole mess. I can’t say the same for Davina. She vanished as soon as this started.”
“If I had that kind of power, I’d do it too.” He chuckled.
I let out a low growl, letting him know that wasn’t the time for jokes.
Clearing his throat, he said, “You made it sound like she managed to get away just in time before losing something important.”
I nodded. “She has Addison’s hair with her. It would’ve been great had it all been swept away or some shit like that.”
He scoffed. “I don’t think it’s that simple. She probably has that securely stored somewhere. She might’ve even made sure of that the moment she didn’t need the rest.”
The thought of it only angered me. “You know what? Forget I even brought it up. I’m just glad everything is working as it should. It’s all thanks to Addison’s massive attack. All of Davina’s spells cast here aren’t working for now.”
“Yup,” he said with the mind link. “Well, it’s time for me to leave you in your mess. I better go and check out my room and…”
He trailed off as Jeffrey walked past my open bedroom door in the hallway, constantly digging through the mud with his fingertips.
“What do you think he’s looking for?” Tyler asked using the mind link.
“No idea, but something that’s only become important now.”
“Huh?”
I smiled a little as I thought about it. “Right when it was confirmed that we were about to be hit by this attack, Jeffrey carried

Nora’s corpse and left the palace to burn it far away. He didn’t want the current to take her out of his arms. That explains why he isn’t drenched, except for his lower legs and hands. There were so many of his valuables in this palace, but he had to think fast and choose, so he left them all behind for her.”
“That’s…”
Tyler trailed off and when I looked at his side profile, my eyes widened with amusement. “Are you about to cry?”
“What? No.” He blinked rapidly. “I better go and check the mess in my room now.”
I shook my head as I watched him leave but when he got to the doorway, he stopped in his tracks and looked back at me.
“Davina’s spells and all that shit were messed up after the attack. Nothing’s holding you back from leaving this place, so why are you still here?”
