Chapter 83 Nothing
Chapter 83: Nothing
Addison
The voices kept coming at me all at once.
“Addison, do something!”
“Look at the current! It’s getting worse!”
“You can’t just let Nora go like that!”
The platform was already drifting too fast and the flames flickered unevenly as the river pulled it sideways.
“No,” I whispered. “Please, not like this.”
All eyes were still on me, filled with expectation and desperation.
Someone called out my name again, begging me to help.
I was already certain there was nothing I could do, but I told myself to raise my hands anyway.
The moment I did, the entire pack went silent. I glanced around and saw the hope in everyone’s faces. I had to try.
Closing my eyes, I called out to Saga for help but she didn’t answer.
I was on my own, so I pushed harder and pictured the river flowing smoothly after slowing down. But when I opened my eyes, the water didn’t respond to me.
The murmurs began to spread about why it wasn’t working.
My hands began to shake and I had to think fast. I couldn’t let them see me like that.
Quickly dropping my hands, I tried to connect to my family with the mind link, but I couldn’t even do that. Fuck. Instead, I subtly shook my head at them with a knowing look in my eyes.
Their response was instant with no questions because they understood me.
“Enough,” my mother said firmly. “My daughter has pushed herself too hard these past days and she’s exhausted. There’s nothing she can do right now. You all know she would’ve given anything to help her aunt.”
Her words were calm, controlled and protective, but there was nothing but disappointment through the pack as everyone was frustrated.
“That’s not an excuse!” someone said from the back.
“How could you let this happen?”
“The currents have never been like this before. How will Nora rest in peace like this?”
The voices only continued to overlap as some pack members pointed fingers at me. It felt like an attack was coming.
It was now my brothers who stepped forward, Cole on one side and Dylan on my other side.
“Can you all just stop?” Cole snapped, his temper beginning to show. “Do you think any of this is easy for my sister?”
“There’s no need to point fingers at her,” Dylan added, his voice softer but still sharp.
The arguing only grew louder no matter what my brothers said in my defense. It was only when my father roared that everyone shut up, his warning instantly taken seriously.
But just a few seconds later, a woman ran along the river bank, screaming for Nora as she was about to face the worst.
The rest of the pack followed and so did I. The current shifted again as it turned stronger and wilder. The platform veered suddenly, scraping against the rocks along the bank and the wood on the edge cracked.
The gasps erupted around me as others shouted warnings at the river, as if it could hear them.
I had never felt so useless as I watched like everyone else.
The platform was now nearing the edge and the river pulled her away faster now.
When it tipped over the edge of the waterfall, it disappeared into the mist and I almost dropped to my knees. That was it. I never eased her passage, never guided her gently and never gave her the peaceful farewell she deserved.
The pack went quiet, but they all turned to me, still looking at me like it was my fault. I didn’t feel any different from them because I believed I had failed her.

It was midnight and I was curled up on the corner of my bed, my knees brought close to my chest as I stared at nothing. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the way the river refused to be gentle with my aunt. I even heard the wood crack against

a rock and I felt that helplessness all over again.
Just then, there was a soft knock at my door from my mother. I didn’t answer, but the door opened anyway,
When she approached the bed, she didn’t even tell me to sit up or look at her. She just sat beside me on the bed.
I clearly felt the bed sink, but I still didn’t turn.
She wrapped an arm around my shoulder and pulled me closer towards her. I let it happen as I didn’t have the strength to resist.
“Sweetie, there was nothing you could have done for her,” she said softly.
“I know,” I whispered. “And that’s the worst part.” I pulled hard on the fabric of my sleeve. “It really feels like Saga isn’t even there anymore. She’s gone quiet before, but not like this. I can’t even use the mind link. It feels like she completely shut the door this time.”
She kissed my hair, but didn’t rush to fix it.
I thought she’d say something about what happened on that riverbank. Instead, she changed the subject.
“Madge and Lyra are still holding the barrier up. Jeffrey won’t be able to leave our territory and no one will get in either. The two of them are growing weaker but they’re doing their best. They won’t let anything happen to us tonight. How do you feel?”
I forced a laugh as she ended up going back to that same subject.
“I feel awful. I should’ve done something.”
She gave me a small smile. “That’s not what I meant.”
I realized that she was talking about losing Aunt Nora.
“It feels like I lost a part of myself, I admitted. “It feels like something was ripped out and there’s nothing to replace it.”
She nodded slowly. “That’s because you did lose a part of yourself and I won’t lie to you, I’ll never be able to fill the space Nora left behind.”
Guilt immediately hit me hard. “Mom, you shouldn’t say that.” I finally faced her. “You’re my mom and are just as special to me.”
She let out a small and sad laugh. “I know, but I’m not your aunt Nora. I felt how broken you were when you said goodbye to her. That’s how amazing she was.”
I looked away. “I know what you’re trying to do.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Oh, really?”
“You’re trying to distract me, but it won’t work.”
She stayed quiet, letting me speak.
“I meant what I said before.” My voice began to tremble. “I don’t want this power anymore, not if this is what it does to people.”
She held my hand and squeezed it gently. “When you said that for the first time yesterday, you made it sound like you’d never use it again, but tonight, you still tried when you wanted to ease Nora’s passage. You reached for your power, not out of anger, but love and that matters a lot.”
I shook my head firmly. “It doesn’t get rid of what I did. Twenty werewolves are dead and now, there’s going to be a war.”
Her grip on my hand tightened just a little. “War may come whether you use your power or not, but when you use it for the right reasons, it doesn’t make you a monster. Remember your ability to heal once you’re at your full potential? Isn’t that amazing?”
She tried her best, but I wasn’t ready to believe that there was anything good left in what I could do with my abilities.
I was about to tell her that when the wall rippled as Lyra walked through it the way she always did.
“Your mom has to go,” she said flatly.
I raised my eyebrows at her. “Go where?”
My mother rose to her feet before Lyra could respond. “I’m going to see your father. We need to talk about what we’re going to do about Jeffrey.”
That gave me something to look forward to because I wanted to distract myself, so I got up too.
“No,” my mother said gently. “Just stay here with Lyra.”
She was already moving towards the door as I begged her to let me follow, but her decision was final.

Because I wouldn’t listen, I followed behind her anyway and was about to walk through the door so we could go together
Suddenly, I struggled to step out into the hallway as something invisible pressed against my chest like a wall of glass. I was confused for a moment, watching my mother walk away while I was just left there.
Then, the door shut from outside and the realization hit me. I turned slowly and Lyra was still standing there, her hand on her hip with an unreadable expression.
“You stopped me?” My eyes narrowed at her.
“Yes, I did.”
I moved towards her. “But why? I just want to help and-”
“There’s no need for you to be part of that discussion,” she said bluntly. “You’re just a child. Let the grown-ups handle this. You’re already going through some shit, so stay out of it.”
At a loss for words, I sat back down on the edge of my bed, staring at the floor.
Strangely, her words didn’t hurt the way I thought they would. Maybe it was because they were just honest, or because I’d gotten used to her being that way.
“Always so blunt,” I said like I wasn’t offended.
She didn’t say a word. Instead, she approached me and reached for my hand. I blinked and the next thing I knew, we were standing in an unfamiliar forest. It didn’t feel like the one within our territory.
“Where are we?” I pulled my hand away from her. I didn’t even give her time to answer before I spoke again. “I didn’t want to leave my room after what happened. You shouldn’t have brought me here.”
“We need to talk. What happened by the riverbank sucked, but there’s one thing we can do to awaken that dormant power.”
“No. I’m not interested,” I replied immediately, turning so I wouldn’t face her anymore.
She sighed. “Imagine someone you love is trapped underwater and they’re drowning. Wouldn’t you want to save them?”
The image hit me hard. “I would. I can’t imagine losing anyone else right now.”
“Then you don’t want your power taken away. You just don’t want to look past what happened to those werewolves.”
I turned around real fast. “So I’m just supposed to keep using it? How would that look to everyone? There was something subtle I saw in some of our pack members and I was certain of it. They looked at me like I’ve put their lives in danger and I have.”
The air suddenly shifted and another presence appeared just a few feet away. It was Madge.
“I knew I’d find you here,” she said, her eyes on Lyra with a knowing look.
Lyra rolled her eyes like she’d been caught doing something she shouldn’t. “Of course you did.”
I glanced between them with confusion. Something about that place clearly meant more than I understood.
“What are you doing here, mom?” she asked with irritation in her voice.
Madge didn’t answer right away as she looked at me then back at her daughter, her expression suddenly serious.
“You two need to come with me, now,” she said urgently.
