Chapter 84: For Her
Chapter 84: For Her
Addison
The three of us reappeared in Moon Frost Pack’s territory, right outside the meeting hall, so we went in.
Apart from my parents and the elders being present, Jeffrey was there too. He was still alive and in one piece, sitting comfortably like he belonged there.
Madge didn’t waste any time. She lifted her hands, chanting under her breath and the air began to shift until it came to a stop.
Then, she turned around and said, “I had to put up that barrier spell again. Nothing discussed in this roorn will be heard by anyone outside it.”
She checked it one more time and when she was certain, she took her seat.
My father looked at me and for a moment, I thought he was going to speak. Instead, he looked away.
“Jeffrey,” he said, his voice rough, “tell her yourself.”
I glanced between the two of them, the tension unmistakable. I couldn’t help but think about how they once fought side-by -side at a time when they were part of the same pack and they trusted each other with their lives.
Now, my father could barely tolerate Jeffrey.
Jeffrey cleared his throat and said, “I told your parents everything I know and I want to help you fight Warrick.”
My head tilted in disbelief as I chuckled. I just couldn’t stop myself. “Do you expect me to believe that? Does anyone here believe that? We all know how loyalty works. You serve your Alpha and that’s the Lycan King.”
“I understand your doubt in me, but I made a vow to myself to fight Warrick even before I brought Nora back to you.”
I was about to respond when my mother stepped in, her voice calm and steady the way it always got when she had already decided on something.
“We don’t know yet whether Jeffrey’s intentions are good or bad.” She looked right at me, “If he betrays us even once Madge’s spell will take effect.”
Madge nodded. “His body will begin to decay, starting from the hands and then inward. It will be a slow and painful death.”
That helped put me at ease. “That’s fair enough.”
My father cleared his throat, taking control of the discussion again. “Jeffrey knows exactly how many strands of hair Max took from you.”
The way I’d felt betrayed hit me hard, but it faded quickly by the fact that Max was forced into doing it.
“How many?” I asked.
“Five,” my father answered. “One was used to locate Nora and another one for that linking spell. That means there are three left.”
“Maybe two,” Lyra chimed in.
My head turned towards her. “How come?”
“Davina may have used another strand,” she said carefully. “She must’ve cast a spell on Saga so that the destruction-”
“Just stop!” I instantly got up, my hands shaking. “What are you trying to do? Make me feel better? This time, I felt Saga surge.” My voice cracked. “No one can calm me down except Koa. I’ve always known that, so have you. I did this, so stop trying to give me false hope.”
No one dared say a word and I stormed out with my breath heavy.,
I came straight to the front yard and sat by the steps, bringing my knees close to my chest as I stared at the night sky. I closed my eyes and silently called out to Saga in my mind, but there was no response.
I only had a few minutes alone as I heard footsteps approaching. I opened my eyes to see who it was. It was Jeffrey. He stood a few feet away.
“I’m leaving,” he said, “for now.”
I looked away. “Good.”

I looked back at him. “Why are you doing this?”

He gave a sad smile. “I already answered that question. It’s because of Nora.”
My eyes narrowed. “Aren’t you married?”
He chuckled softly. “Yes and at one point, it could’ve been Nora as my Luna.”
He seemed to linger on that memory for a while, then sighed and said, “I’ll leave now.”
He turned to leave but paused. “Any message for Max?”
“Why would I do that? Who knows what’s going to happen? It’s already not safe. Don’t forget what you’re doing here. If you were to betray us by using him, I wouldn’t even be able to tell that something’s wrong, just like I couldn’t feel a thing when he was in trouble. I don’t know why.”
“It must have been Davina’s magic working. You know, the confirmation came from her that you were responsible for the attack, but Max was the first to warn me. He could feel that it was you and he knew I was still in the dungeon with your
aunt.”
It made me smile a little that Max could feel me from so far away.
“That attack did more than just break Davina’s several spells on the palace. It freed him.” And with that, he turned around to leave.
He had only taken a few steps when something began to bother me so I got up without following him. “Wait, if Max is free, why won’t he leave?”
“It’s because of Tyler. He doesn’t want his brother to be part of any of this. If he dares to leave, Tyler will be the one to suffer. Who would want that for their sibling?”
As I thought about it, I began to head back to my room, feeling awful for Max and his brother. I wished I could text him or something, but every move was now a risk.
I was wondering what he was going through at that moment with so much worry when my phone rang. That hadn’t happened in a while. My first thought was that Max might’ve found a way to talk to me in private. The incoming call was from an unknown number and that only fueled my hopes that it was him, so I picked up quickly.

“Hello?” I held my breath, my heart already racing as I anticipated to hear his voice.
“Hey.”
The voice that came from the other end of the line wasn’t Max and while that left me disappointed, I was also surprised.
“Jess?”
“Wait, you recognized me?”
“Of course. I never thought you’d call me.”
She chuckled like she was nervous. “First of all, I’m sorry for what I did to you. I shouldn’t have gone to the Lycan King. That was before you told me you could heal me.”
I swallowed hard, thinking about how I already had strong doubts that I’d continue with the other elements.
“It’s okay,” I said flatly.
“No, it’s not. That was so wrong of me to do. Tyler introduced me to his parents and they humiliated me before rejecting me. They said I have nothing to offer.”
I sat up, thoughtfully tilting my head. “Hold on. Does that mean you wouldn’t be apologizing right now had everything gone your way with his parents?”
She hesitated. “You want the truth? Yes. All I’ve ever wanted was to be accepted anywhere after you hurt me like that. It was hard to deal with it no matter how hard I tried to fit in. And then came a lycan prince who genuinely liked me and I liked him too. Why wouldn’t I want that? I know it’s selfish, but I really thought that was my chance. Well, his parents took it away.”
Strangely, I wasn’t mad about it. “Thanks for being honest.”
“Starting now, I won’t lie to you about anything. Even if it’s going to hurt you, I’ll tell you the truth. I actually wanted to apologize sooner, but with everything that’s been going on…she trailed off. What happened? Twenty werewolves died because of you.”
I’d heard that so many times, yet it still felt suffocating each time.
With a sigh, I told her everything that had happened.
“That was awful. I’m sorry about your aunt. She was always so nice to me. The way I see it, it’s not your fault. You tried to stop. It was the power within you that was out of control.”
My forehead creased. “Why do you sound so nonchalant about all this? Twenty werewolves died. So many packs now see me as the enemy.”
“I’m actually worried about you. I hope nothing bad happens to you. You have to keep learning until you’re able to use all the elements. You promised you’d heal me.”
I felt so awful that I said nothing.
“Hello?” she said.
“I’m here. You’re right. I promised.”
“That’s why nothing bad must happen to you. You’re that important to me.”
I smiled a little. “Thanks.”
“If you ever need help with anything, call me. I’m on your side, so is my entire family.”
After the call came to an end, I looked down at the phone without blinking. For her own selfish reasons, she wanted me to win because I was the only one who could help. Having her on our side when so many were against us carried so much weight.

It was now two nights in a row that I couldn’t sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, I was back in that dungeon linked to Aunt Nora. I’d given up on trying to go to sleep again, so I came to the kitchen early in the morning, hoping a snack might help.
