Mysterious mate to the lycan prince (Addison and Max) novel Chapter 85

Chapter 85. On Your Side

again. Everyone else had stopped or at least learned how to hide it better. I told myself I had to do the same.

Then, my phone rang in my pocket a few times with incoming messages before there was an incoming call, I needed a distraction, so I took it out to check and it was a call from Gina. I hadn’t spoken to her since the day I’d gone to Blackbolt High a few days ago.

“Hello?”

“I didn’t think you’d pick up,” she said from the other end of the line, her voice stiff and almost unfriendly. “Just a few days ago. I had plans to go to Pike Hill and-”

“What?” My heart jumped. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” she said dismissively. “I didn’t go. My family and I had to travel somewhere else.”

I sighed with relief. “Thank goodness.”

There was a long pause before she said, “So, did you actually do it?”

“Yes,” I whispered with guilt. “It was all me.”

Her voice hardened. “My friend lost her leg. Not even shifting could fix it. I sent you pictures and videos. Did you even check them before I called? You’re a murderer!” She raised her voice in anger. “I thought your powers were cool, but they are terrifying. You’re just-”

“Warrick murdered my aunt!” I screamed.

She went silent

“I felt it happen, every second of it,” I said in a shaky voice.

I told her every detail of what happened and by the end of it, I burst into tears before I could stop myself.

“Addison, I’m sorry.” Her voice was softer now. “I didn’t know. I shouldn’t have said that at all.”

She was still in the middle of apologizing when I hung up on her. I just didn’t feel like talking after that.

I wiped my face with the sleeve of my sweater, then looked at the phone in my hand

I knew I shouldn’t look, but my fingers moved anyway. I opened the messages and the first photo hit hard. There were destroyed homes, bloody streets and those limbs just sticking out in all the wreckage. There were videos, some shaky footage of people walking through the wreckage, voices shouting and blaming me.

I then came across a video that Ruby had made. She was in tears, but I knew her too well. She just had to be in the spotlight and make it clear that she was in support of Warrick’s decision. Staring straight into the camera, she said I shouldn’t exist and needed to be captured as I was too dangerous. I didn’t even finish the video as it only left me frustrated. I slammed my phone down on the table at the thought that an unavoidable war was coming. I knew that too well, but I didn’ t know that there was something like that going on. It hurt me the most that my family obviously knew and they kept it from me.

As I wondered just how long they had known, Cole walked into the kitchen without looking at me first. He was covered in sweat that even drenched the collar of his shirt. He headed straight to the fridge and pulled it open. Then he stopped and I watched his shoulders stiffen when he saw Aunt Nora’s favorite drink.

He closed the fridge quickly without even taking anything and finally turned towards me. That was when he noticed me. He came over, asking if I was okay and I just slid the phone across the table towards him.

After looking down at it for a few seconds, he picked it up and as soon as one of the videos started to play, his grip on my phone tightened so hard that his knuckles turned white.

“Did you know it was this bad?” I asked.

With gritted teeth, he said, “Why the hell would you look at this? I knew we should’ve taken your phone away!”

He looked like he was actually going to crush my phone. Then, he saw my face and exhaled sharply. My expression forced his hand to relax.

He set the phone down carefully and pulled out a chair to sit beside me instead of pacing like he would’ve done.

“Things are bad, even within our pack,” he admitted. “Dylan overheard someone talking shit about you last night. He almost broke the guy’s legs.”

“What exactly did he say?”

He shook his head. “You don’t need to know that.”

If he didn’t want me to hear it, then it must’ve been that bad, so I let it be.

Chapter 85 On Your Side

“You know how I feel about Max.” He suddenly changed the topic. “But knowing his father, he must’ve gone through a lot.”

I thought about Max with a heavy heart. “I don’t even want to imagine it. I still hate the fact that I couldn’t tell that something was going on with him. Everything’s just been going wrong.”

“Still can’t reach Saga?”

“No.”

He held my hand and squeezed it. “You shouldn’t let this break you. You’re my strong and smart little sister. You’ll be alright.”

That did it for me, so I yanked my hand back. “Why are you acting like this isn’t a big deal?”

He scoffed. “Aren’t you blaming yourself a little too much? Why don’t you just-”

“Cole,” my father’s voice interrupted as he stood by the door. “Your mother needs you in the garden.”

Even with frustration written all over his face, he pointed at me before leaving. “We’re not done.”

When I was alone with my father, I braced myself for lots of scolding, but instead of lecturing me or trying to soften the truth, he simply gestured towards the door.

“Walk with me,” he said calmly.

I walked with my father for a while within our territory, neither of us speaking first.

We walked by a few warriors who were in training while in their wolf form, their eyes glowing brighter when they saw me. They hated that they had to prepare themselves for war more than ever because of me.

When we finally got somewhere quiet, he said, “I know it’s been hard for you, especially after those deaths. You said you wanted it all to be taken away and I thought about a stronger seal, but that won’t work anymore. You’ve already progressed too much. You can already manipulate air and water. It’s not such an awful thing to have such power when it’s used for good.”

“That’s what mom said.”

“When we go to war and fail to emerge victorious-”

“When?” I sharply interrupted him and stopped in my tracks.

He stopped right beside me. “We’ve all been thinking and the truth is that we’re outnumbered.”

I clenched my fist like that could change the fact that we were outnumbered. “This is all my fault. If anything happens to you or anyone part of the Moon Frost Pack, I’ll never forgive myself.”

He smiled. “Don’t be too hard on yourself. Before I became the Alpha of this pack, you shouldn’t forget who I was, the one I served and who stood beside me as I did it.”

My father had done worse things for years compared to me, but that didn’t completely ease the guilt.

“Do you really trust Jeffrey?” I asked him.

“No, but he swore on Nora’s lost life and that’s enough for me. We have no choice but to trust him and remember that if he betrays us?”

“He dies,” I responded.

He led the way as we started walking again.

“I heard you talking to your brother. We didn’t tell you about what’s been posted for your own good. We thought it would take you longer before you even wanted to look at your phone. I guess we were wrong.”

“Ruby’s on Warrick’s side. Why wouldn’t she be?”

He waved his hand dismissively. “She doesn’t matter. Let’s talk about someone who does. When Cole made a joke about Max possibly being dead, I saw your face. Maybe you didn’t even realize it yourself yet, but I saw the panic in your eyes. That was your love for him. I can only imagine what he’s going through right now.”

I thought about the cruelty in Warrick’s eyes, the dungeon, the spells and the way he used his power. I knew what he was capable of and something shifted inside of me.

“I want to help him.” I was now filled with determination.

My father gave me a warm smile as he proudly nodded. “I was waiting to hear that. Let’s go and get your mate.”
