However, it was just Cedric being one-sided.
Ruth immediately perked up. If that was the case, then Laura still had a shot. She thought for a moment and said, "But you really shouldn't feel too guilty. After all, it was because of your behind-the-scenes help that the Liddells didn't go under after their parents died.
"You're the reason their company bounced back. And didn't they end up tied to the Cantrells when Donovan married into the family? They're not as helpless as you think."
Emma nodded lightly. "That might be true, but it doesn't erase the fact that we were part of what started it all."
But Ruth did not agree deep down. She thought that the family was just unlucky. What kind of idiot drives around that late at night?
She sighed, clearly frustrated. "So you're really going to side with Noelle and leave Samantha hanging? We've been best friends for years.
"Remember when your husband almost left you for that woman? I was the one who helped you keep your marriage together. You owe me this."
Emma looked at her calmly. "And what exactly do you want me to do?"
Ruth replied, "Noelle wants to be with Ced, right? Then have Cedric talk to her."
She was already plotting in her head. If Noelle and Cedric had fallen out, and then Noelle found out Cedric had been in the car during that crash, there was no way she would stay with him after that. It was perfect—a plan so good, it felt like fate had handed it to her.
Emma hesitated. She did not think it would work; honestly, it felt a bit wrong. Nonetheless, with Ruth crying and begging like that, she was caught between a rock and a hard place.
...
Inside the building, Noelle sneezed the moment she stepped into her office. She let out a sigh, thinking about what Emma had said.
Noelle did not hesitate. She threw herself into the chaos, determined to save the prototype at any cost. Behind her, the lab was in total panic.
Cedric had just received an emergency call and rushed straight to the lab floor. His expression shifted the second he arrived. "Where's Noelle?"
"I don't think she's out yet!"
"I saw her run in to grab the prototype!" someone shouted.
Cedric's face darkened, and his heart dropped into his stomach. "She can't be hurt... Absolutely not!"
He tore off his jacket, covered his mouth and nose, and sprinted headfirst into the smoke-filled lab.
