But when she thought about how miserable her current situation was, she forced those doubts back down.
What if she was just reading too much into everything?
After accepting Mason’s protection, she could not be the one to break that fragile balance.
So Amelia quietly withdrew her gaze, like a snail retreating into its shell.
But the truth was, if she had asked, Mason would not have hidden anything from her.
Meanwhile, Ethan, Hannah, and Isla were on their way back to Rowe Villa.
The air inside the car was unbearably tense, almost suffocating.
Ethan sat with a dark expression, an icy chill radiating from his entire body.
He said nothing as he stared at Hannah and Isla in the back seat. They were still clinging to each other and crying.
There was a time when that heartbreaking scene would easily stir his emotions.
But now, what kept replaying in his mind was Amelia’s cold statement.
“I fell right at the bottom of the living room staircase. The floor there … it’s covered in my blood.”
If Amelia had not been lying, then someone must have cleaned every trace of blood before he got home, leaving nothing behind.
Soon, the car screeched to a stop in front of Rowe Villa.
Ethan practically kicked the door open as he got out and strode straight into the living room.
Hannah and Isla were startled by his behavior and hurried inside after him.
“Miles! Go to the security room and pull all the footage from yesterday. I want the footage covering the living room and the staircase from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.”
The elderly butler was frightened by the murderous aura surrounding Ethan. He froze for a moment before answering quickly, “Yes, Mr. Rowe.”

After giving the order, Ethan turned around sharply.

The eyes that had once held only tenderness toward Hannah now fixed on her like a hawk’s.
Under the dazzling crystal chandelier, his gaze reflected something terrifyingly dark.
Step by step, he walked toward Hannah.
That look made Hannah’s heart pound in fear. She instinctively took a step back, her voice trembling. “Ethan, you … what’s wrong?”
“Tell me the truth.
“Was it really… Isla?”
Hannah’s heart clenched sharply, her fingertips turning cold in an instant.
She knew this moment had finally come.
On the drive back from the hospital, she had already played through every possible scenario and response in her mind.
Ethan was not stupid. Amelia’s words were more than enough to plant a seed of doubt in his heart.
She simply hadn’t expected his anger to erupt so quickly.
Still, Hannah was no simple–minded airhead.
After a brief moment of panic, she quickly steadied herself.
The frightened look on her face remained unchanged. But beneath it, her eyes were filled with cold calculation.
She knew that at this moment, any explanation or denial would be useless and would only deepen Ethan’s suspicion.
To turn the situation around, she had to take a risky step.
With that decision made, Hannah suddenly spun around, raised her hand, and slapped Isla hard across the face!
Isla staggered from the blow. A clear red handprint appeared on her pale little face almost instantly.
The pain made her burst into tears uncontrollably.

“Spill! Did
you do it?” Hannah glared at her daughter. “Tell Ethan! Tell him why you pushed Ms. Harlow! Who taught you to do this? Say it!”
The sudden scene shocked everyone, including Ethan, who had been burning with rage.
He looked at Hannah’s almost crazed expression, then at Isla, who was crying her heart out. The anger in his chest was dulled somewhat by the sheer shock.
“Mom… I didn’t… I really didn’t…” Isla sobbed, gasping for breath, her body trembling violently with fear. “It wasn’t me…”
Then, as if she had found a lifeline, she broke free from Hannah’s grip and rushed forward, hugging Ethan’s leg tightly.
“Ethan!” She looked up at him with a tear–streaked little face, her eyes red and swollen. “Don’t you believe me anymore? I didn’t lie! It really wasn’t me!”
A child’s tears were always the soft spot in an adult’s heart.
Looking at Isla’s pitiful face, Ethan’s resolve wavered.
His reason told him there were too many doubts and that this could not be so simple.
But Amelia’s pale face and Isla’s tear–soaked face overlapped in his mind, two equally pitiful faces twisting together and dragging him into a deep conflict.
He instinctively avoided Isla’s tearful eyes, afraid that one look would make him give in completely.
“Isla,” he asked in a low voice, “last night I saw you run in from outside, looking very panicked. Tell me, were you scared because you pushed someone?”
Isla shook her head while crying, stammering through her explanation. “No … I was just playing alone in the garden. It got dark… and there were no lights in the garden. I … I was scared of the dark, that’s why I panicked…”
