“Oh, my sweet girl!” Clara burst in the moment she was allowed in, her exaggerated voice painfully loud in the quiet ward. “Why are you all alone? Where’s Mason? This ward is huge, and he just leaves you here by yourself? That’s so thoughtless!”

Under the blanket, Amelia’s hand clenched unconsciously.

She knew it. Whenever they showed up, it was never for anything good.

“He’s busy,” Amelia replied flatly, keeping her tone polite but distant.

Clara didn’t catch the coldness at all. She set the thermal container on the nightstand and started lecturing. “Look at you. You’re grown, yet you’re still so careless. You even managed to hurt yourself just walking around. You need to be more careful. Stop making people worry!”

It sounded like concern, but each word was laced with blame and irritation, as if Amelia’s injury were some inconvenient embarrassment.

“That’s enough,” Kennedy said sternly as he stepped forward. He probably sensed there was more to Amelia’s injury than she was letting on, so he cut his wife off before she could

go on.

Putting on a caring–father act, he glanced at Amelia’s casted leg, his voice softer. “How are you feeling? What did the doctor say? Is it serious?

“If the hospital isn’t convenient, just tell me. We can take you back to Harlow Estate. There are maids to take care of you. It’s easier there, and we can help you recover properly.”

Amelia found the words absurd, almost laughable.

That place hadn’t been her home for

Had they already forgotten how things turned ugly after Beatrice returned and how they kicked her out?

Now they wanted her to go back?

“Since you’re asking, I’ll be direct,” he said, his voice hard.

“You know about the project the Everetts signed with the Rowes, don’t you?”

Amelia’s heart sank again.

They really came for that.

“Everett Group is huge. Even a small part of their business would keep Harlow Group afloat for years.”

Kennedy stared at her intently, as if assessing the value of a commodity.

“If the Rowe Group can get it, why can’t we? You’re close with Mason. Have him give the next project to Harlow Group. That shouldn’t be difficult for you, right?”

He sounded so entitled, like it was her unquestionable duty to secure benefits for the Harlows.
