“You” Kennedy was rendered speechless by her questions. His face flushed from pale to red.
Humiliation and anger boiled over. He jumped to his feet, shouting, “How dare you! Amelia, don’t forget your last name!
“If we hadn’t fed you and dressed you in luxury, you’d still be rotting somewhere! We raised you for over 20 years, and now we ask one favor for the family, and this is how you repay us? Don’t you have any conscience?!”
But Amelia’s smirk only grew bigger.
She hadn’t forgotten their faces twisting in disgust when they found out she wasn’t their real daughter.
Once Beatrice appeared, they barely gave Amelia any time to adjust.
They kicked her out of the home where she’d lived for 20 years without a shred of mercy.
When she was driven out, rain poured down.
Dragging her suitcase, Amelia stood dazed on the street, staring at the brightly lit villa she had called home. Inside, laughter rang out as they threw a welcome party for Beatrice.
If luck hadn’t stepped in, if the Everetts hadn’t taken her in for three years, the Harlows would have erased her existence.
Over the years, she had done more than enough to repay the Harlows for raising her.
And yet, she had never received even a shred of understanding in return.
At that thought, the last bit of warmth in Amelia’s heart froze.
“Looks like Beatrice never mentioned the deal between us,” she said lightly.
Clara’s face flickered. She snapped warily, “What deal?”
Amelia stated it calmly, like reciting a fact. “Beatrice promised that as long as I could come up with 30 million dollars, I’d cut all ties with the Harlows. We’d be strangers for good. The lawyers have already drawn up the agreement.”
She added with a mocking edge, “But for something this big, she didn’t even bother telling you. Even if the money comes through, that agreement could turn into scrap paper in your hands.”
“What?!”

Thirty million!

Kennedy’s mind exploded.
Before Mason returned, when everyone assumed Amelia had been completely cast off by the Everetts, he might have accepted 30 million to buy out a burdensome adopted daughter without hesitation.
But now, everything was different.
Mason was back and clearly still cared about Amelia.
That meant she was no longer a worthless castoff. She was a goose that laid golden eggs, an endless source of profit.
And they wanted to buy her off for just 30 million?
Dream on!
Rage and greed instantly swallowed Kennedy’s reason.
To him, Amelia wasn’t just defying him–she was insulting his intelligence.
“You ungrateful brat!”
Kennedy swung his hand toward Amelia’s face without a second thought.
He didn’t even consider that she was a patient with a cast on her leg.
All he wanted was to slap some sense into her and make her know her place.
Amelia’s pupils dilated slightly.
She watched the hand rapidly filling her field of vision.
But she didn’t dodge or close her eyes.
She lifted her chin slightly, showing no trace of fear–only a cold, deathly indifference.
If that slap could sever the last fake thread between them and give her peace, fine. She’d take it.
But just then, the ward door swung open abruptly.
Mason’s tall, commanding figure appeared in the doorway, radiating a cold intensity.
His eyes immediately locked on the scene.

“What are you doing?”
Kennedy’s raised hand froze midair.
The anger was still there, but Mason’s presence sent goosebumps across his skin.
“M–Mason … why are you here?” he stammered, trying to retract his hand back as nothing happened, but guilt made him clumsy.
Clara reacted faster.
Almost instantly, she switched to a face full of concern.
“Oh, Mason!” she called out, stepping in before Kennedy could, all smiles and warmth, like the sharp, scheming woman from before didn’t exist at all.
“We heard Amelia got hurt, so we got worried and came straight over to check on her.”
Clara kept talking as she reached for Amelia’s hand, trying to be friendly. “Her dad just worried too much and raised his voice. Our family has always treasured Amelia. A father and daughter don’t hold grudges. They’d be over it after just a couple of words.”
But Mason didn’t even look at them.
