Then his gaze shifted to Hannah, carrying a hint of appraisal.

Ethan nodded slightly and introduced her evenly, “Mr. Libron, this is Ms. Hannah Gray, a promising designer under our company.”
The formal tone drew a clear line between them.
For a moment, Hannah’s smile stiffened, and her fingers, still linked with his arm, unconsciously tightened.
But she quickly adjusted, keeping her expression gentle and nodding politely at John Libron.
From an angle most wouldn’t notice, Ethan’s brow twitched just a little.
He didn’t like the feeling of being treated as someone’s support or accessory.
He had brought her here only because her status as a contestant could save some unnecessary trouble.
Yet she seemed to misunderstand her place.
After a few polite words, he leaned slightly and spoke quietly to her, “Go mingle with the crowd a little. Get to know some people. It’ll do you good in the future. I’ve got something to take care of upstairs.”
It was basically an unspoken dismissal.
Hannah’s heart skipped. Tonight, he was her main support—without him, standing here alone would be unbearably awkward.
She quickly put on her most pitiful expression, biting her lip slightly and looking up at him. “But… I’ll be nervous on my own. I don’t know anyone here, and I get nervous around people. Will you come back for me later?”
Ethan’s expression didn’t change.
If anything, there was a hint of annoyance,
“It’s fine. If you’re uncomfortable, find a staff member–they’ll take you directly to your seat at the auction.”
That completely shut down any hope of clinging to him for support.
Disappointment crossed her face–but when she heard “seat,” her eyes lit up again with a spark

of hope. “So we’ll be sitting together?”

Even just sitting near him, even in the audience, would prove her special status.
Ethan shook his head. “No. I’m in the VIP section up front. Your seat is in the contestant area with the other designers whose works are being auctioned tonight.”
“VIP section” versus “contestant area.”
Two words, yet a world apart.
Hannah’s gaze dimmed immediately. She murmured softly, “Alright, then…”
Her disappointed look… Well, it did make her seem almost pitiful.
Out of a basic sense of responsibility for bringing her, Ethan thought for a moment and added, “If you need anything, call me. Since I brought you here, I’m not going to just leave you completely on your own.”
His words were meant to be casual, but Hannah clung to them anyway.
She forced a brave smile and said, trying to seem thoughtful, “It’s fine, Ethan. Go take care of your business. I know you’ve got important things tonight. And … Edison will be here soon anyway. If I stick around with you, people might see us and start gossiping about us.”
Ethan nodded and turned, walking straight toward the stairs to the second floor.
His tall, decisive figure soon disappeared into the crowd.
Left standing alone, Hannah’s smile faded, replaced by frustration.
She gripped her clutch tightly.
She had thought tonight would be her chance to shine, a perfect opportunity to show off her link with Ethan.
But that bitch Amelia had packed everything up before leaving!
Now Hannah had to scramble and wear a plain dress she’d bought ages ago.
The dress was decent enough, but among all the high–end, limited–edition gowns at the gala, her dress looked plain and easy to miss.
Earlier, while linked to Ethan’s arm, she had felt some of the attention land on her too.
But now that he was gone, she felt completely invisible in the crowd.

She looked around at the other guests–women in stunning gowns, sparkling jewelry catching the lights, chatting in groups with that effortless, confident vibe she could never pull off.
Jealousy burned through her, making her feel small and invisible.
Then a gentle voice spoke beside her.
“Ms. Gray?”
Hannah turned to see a well–dressed middle–aged man smiling at her.
She recognized him–Dylan Lennon, one of the judges for the design competition.
Edison had quietly set this up for her ahead of time.
They had met privately before, and he had accepted the gift she
gave
him.
“Hi, Mr. Lennon,” Hannah said immediately, wiping away all her negative emotions, her face lighting up
with a sweet, harmless smile.
Seeing her standing alone, he asked kindly, “I saw you with Mr. Rowe. Did he leave to take care of something?
“Don’t just stand here. Come with me. The other designers are all together. You’re all young, so you’ll have plenty to talk about and get to know each other better.”
