“Since I already decided to become strangers with you again, then everything about you, whether good or bad, no longer matters to me. I admit that over the past six years of marriage, I built up far too much resentment and bitterness. Especially when you kept misunderstanding and hurting me again and again because of Hannah and her daughter, I really did think about burning everything down together with you, making things ugly for everyone, and ruining all of you completely. But…”
Amelia’s gaze gradually cleared, growing steady and firm. “From today on, I’m no longer your wife. I need to start over and take my life back. So I refuse to use dirty tactics like yours, stepping on someone I once genuinely loved just to feel relief. From now on, take care of yourselves. And don’t come looking for me again. There’s no affection left between us.”
Ethan watched Amelia’s lips move as she spoke words colder than anything he had ever heard from her.
Yet what filled his mind were fragments from their six year marriage.
She had once been patient, humble, and easily satisfied.
Ethan remembered not long after they got married, when he took her back to the Rowe Estate for a family gathering.
At the table, his arrogant relatives had mocked her background relentlessly, implying that she was nothing more than an unwanted foster child of the Harlows who had gotten incredibly lucky to marry into the Rowes.
She had sat quietly beside him, wearing an expensive designer dress his mother had chosen for her, one that didn’t quite fit.
Her head had been lowered, her fingers clenched until they turned white, yet she hadn’t said a single word, swallowing all the humiliation in silence.
On the drive home, she hadn’t complained once, nor cried or sought sympathy like other women might have.
It was only when he grew impatient and asked why she was so quiet that she turned to him, forced a smile, and said softly, “I feel a little dizzy.”
At the time, Ethan had simply thought she was sensible and knew how not to cause trouble for him.
Then another memory surfaced. The day Amelia’s foster parents had shown up with Beatrice, forcing her to beg the Rowes to invest money into Harlow Group, their words filled with threats and contempt.

Ethan had come home early that day and happened to witness the scene.
He had only thought their behavior was ugly and was annoyed that they kept bothering him with such low level nonsense. With a cold expression, he had ordered the security to throw them out and casually said to her, “You don’t need to let people like that through the door again.”
Just that one off–hand sentence had made Amelia’s usually dull eyes light up instantly, like stars. She had looked up at him, her gaze filled with reliance and admiration.
“Thank you, Ethan,” she had said carefully. “For being on my side.”
Back then, he had thought she was overreacting, even a little ridiculous.
It was such a small thing. Was it really worth that level of gratitude?
Then there was the hardest period after he took over Rowe Group.
With unstable footing, several older relatives on the board constantly worked against him, hollowing out his authority.
Several critical projects had stalled due to internal obstruction.
He had been exhausted and overwhelmed.
It was Amelia who, despite holding an unofficial and awkward position, worked day and night reviewing materials and negotiating deals, salvaging projects that nearly everyone else had abandoned, finally securing his position at Rowe Group.
Yet at the celebration banquet after the projects succeeded, he had casually told everyone, “This was the result of the whole team’s hard work.”
He had grown far too comfortable with Amelia’s sacrifices.
He erased all her contributions without a second thought.
Because he didn’t like her standing out.
What he wanted was an obedient, gentle wife he could control at will.
And she had accepted that.
She had even silently accepted the fact that after six years of marriage, they had never once had a physical relationship.
Up until now, Ethan had always believed Amelia could never leave him.

But only today, as she stood under the spotlight and peeled back every layer of ugliness, did he finally realize how wrong he had been.
The woman he thought he had completely tamed, stripped of all edges, had always possessed a spine made of steel.
By then, Amelia had finished everything she wanted to say.
Her proud, upright back was already turned as she walked away.
Watching the distance between them grow wider and wider, Ethan finally lost his composure.
“Amelia!”
He called out her name without thinking, stopping her.
Amelia paused and turned her head slightly, her eyes silently asking what else he wanted.
“Amelia, what happened today was my fault. I shouldn’t have held that
press conference.”
Ethan struggled to continue.
So many words were lodged in his throat, burning with pain.
He took a deep breath and pleaded, “Stop this, okay? Let’s go home. We can live well together again. We can go back to how things were before. I promise.”
