Chapter 312 What Happened Exactly?

His voice was smooth and inviting, carrying just enough warmth to blur the line between playful and serious.
Amelia immediately shook her head, flustered. “No, it’s nothing like that! Please don’t get the wrong idea. I’m just taking a short trip with Lily, that’s all. I just wanted to let you know.”
Afraid he’d read too much into it, she added quickly, “With all the gossip about the divorce, I figured it’s better to stay out of the spotlight for a while. I already cleared it with Mr. Clem at work.”
Mason watched her try so hard to keep things strictly platonic. After a moment, he nodded, completely unfazed. “Alright. I’ll be traveling for work next week, anyway.”
He didn’t ask a single question about where she was headed, how long she’d be gone, or whether she and Lily would be safe on their own.
His indifference ended up catching Amelia off guard that it almost stung.
She bit her lip.
A dull heaviness rose quietly from her chest.
I wanted space. I wanted to prove I could handle things myself. So why does it bother me when he doesn’t try to hold me back?
Meanwhile, Ethan sat slumped on a bench in the hospital hallway, elbows on his knees, scrubbing his hands over his tired face.
It had only been a few hours since last night’s chaos, but it felt as if he’d just survived a war.
Fortunately, Isla’s injury wasn’t as bad as he’d feared. It was just a nasty cut that looked worse than it really was.
After a round of exams and stitches, she was moved to the pediatric unit.
Hannah stayed glued to her side, so exhausted and emotional that she looked ready to collapse herself.
But Ethan found he couldn’t feel any sympathy. He was just tired, trapped, and weighed down by a frustration he couldn’t shake.
Time slipped by. Eventually, Isla woke up.
Hannah was the first to notice, her relief spilling out in tears. “Isla! You’re awake. Are you

alright? Does anything hurt?”
Isla blinked up at her. When she realized who was at her bedside, her small body tensed. For a second, pure fear flashed across her face.
Ethan figured she was just spooked by the fall.
He moved closer, keeping his tone as gentle as he could. “Isla, it’s alright. I’m here.”
Hearing his voice, Isla’s eyes focused. She turned her head, looking at him with an anxious, pale face.
“Ethan…”
“Yeah, I’m here.” He took a seat, careful of her bandages, and reached for her cold hand. “How do you
feel?”
“It hurts…” Isla’s voice trembled as she fought back tears.
“It’s going to be okay. The doctor said you’ll be just fine.” Ethan offered a reassuring smile. He glanced briefly at Hannah, who hovered nearby, looking completely lost.
Hannah jumped in, desperate to make up for what happened. “Isla. I should’ve pay more attention. When you’re better, I’ll get you that Barbie you wanted, alright?”
But Isla barely glanced her way. She kept her eyes locked on Ethan, lips trembling. “Ethan… are you going to make me and Mommy leave?”
There was no way Ethan could tell a child in a hospital bed the truth.
He forced a smile, patting her hand. “Of course not. You just need to rest and get better.”
For the first time since she’d woken up, Isla’s tense face eased. She nodded, and within moments, exhaustion took over–her eyes drifted shut.
Ethan’s phone buzzed. His assistant was calling to remind him about a major video call in 30
minutes.
He hung up, stood, and told Hannah, “Just focus on taking care of Isla. If anything happens, call
me.”
His tone was so neutral it was impossible to tell what he was thinking, but Hannah sensed the chill beneath the calm words.
“Alright,” she said softly.
Ethan left the room.

That timing is just too much of a coincidence.
He stopped by his car, hesitating for a second before dialing Kevin. “I need you to find out exactly what happened at the side building this afternoon. Especially how Isla ended up falling from that window.”
A short while later, Amelia and Lily stood at the entrance of the estate, suitcases in hand, ready for a fresh start.
Mason insisted on driving them to the airport himself.
The drive was quiet, almost too quiet.
Lily sat in the back seat with her headphones on, pretending to listen to music. In reality, she kept sneaking glances at the front, quietly paying attention to everything happening between Mason and Amelia.
Amelia sat in the front passenger seat, watching the scenery roll by. She tapped her fingers lightly against her knee, unable to relax.
She could feel Mason’s gaze on her–steady and gentle. But for some reason, it just made her more anxious.
