As they neared the airport, Mason was the first to break the silence.

“You’ve got all your IDs with you, right?” he asked, his voice steady as always.

“Yeah. I checked everything.” Amelia said with a nod.

“Text me once you’re settled over there,” he added.

“Okay.”

The exchange was brief, but it carried a quiet understanding. No extra words were needed.

Amelia felt a gentle warmth spread through her heart.

The car rolled to a stop at the drop–off lane outside the terminal.

Mason turned off the engine and looked at her, a faint smile in his eyes. “Alright. Go on. Have fun.

“When you come back, things will be a lot quieter.”

Amelia knew he meant the noise around her divorce.

“Okay. I’ll bring you a gift when I’m back.”

“I’ll be waiting,” Mason said with a smile.

He got out and helped them pull two large suitcases from the trunk.

Lily, reading the room, dragged her own suitcase a few steps ahead, leaving them some space.

Only after Amelia and Lily disappeared into the busy security line did Mason turn back to the car.

He didn’t start the engine right away. Leaning back in his seat, he stared at the glass doors for a long time. Then he let out a low chuckle, like he was talking to himself.

The plane cut through the clouds, leaving far behind the city that had held too much noise and trouble.

By the time they landed at Lingchers Airport, it was already evening.

The air there was cool and clean, filled with the fresh scent of grass and trees.

They grabbed a cab and headed straight to their booked hotel, settling in and putting their luggage away.

“This is the place,” she said, picking a booth by the window and waving over a server. “Nice vibe, right?”

She boldly ordered several of the bar’s signature cocktails.

“Cheers,” Lily said, pushing a glass toward Amelia. “To your freedom!”

Amelia looked at the drink glowing blue under the lights, then smiled and gently slid it back. “I’ll pass.”

“Huh? Why?” Lily blinked. “I thought we said we’re getting drunk tonight.”

“We’re traveling in a place we don’t know,” Amelia said, lifting her lemonade. “Better be careful. What if we run into trouble? I don’t want to end up in the news.”

Lily thought it over and nodded. “Fair point. Okay, you stay sober and keep an eye on me. I’ll drink. If I get wasted, you’re in charge of dragging me back to the hotel.”

“Relax. I won’t lose you.”

The truth was, there was another reason she wasn’t drinking.

She thought about the few times she had gotten drunk before. Every single time, Mason had been there.

Somehow, it became a quiet habit. She dared to let go because she knew he would catch her.

But now, he wasn’t here.

Amelia took a sip of her lemonade.

She turned to look out the window. The old city at night looked soft and hazy. Small groups of tourists walked by, smiling and relaxed.
