Watching Lily spiral in frustration, Amelia thought for a moment and summed it up in the simplest words possible. “So basically, you’re tired of Tim and wanted to use this chance to dump him,” she said. “But instead, he showed up on his own?”
“Yes!” Lily nodded hard.
But just as she was getting fired up, her phone buzzed.
Lily glanced down without thinking.
Her eyes stayed on the screen for only a second. The bold, frustrated look on her face faded right away, replaced by something awkward.
Her gaze drifted. She wouldn’t look Amelia in the eye. She stood up and said, a little stiffly, “Well … uh, Amelia, I—I’m going to step out for some air.”
Amelia watched her quietly. She didn’t ask where Lily was going or who she was meeting.
There was no need to ask.
This woman, who had just sworn she was done with him, was now rushing off the moment she got a message from him.
Amelia suddenly found it a little funny.
Lily really did seem troubled by this messy, never–ending relationship. But deep down, she didn’t actually hate the way Tim chased her, possessive streak and all.
In fact, back at the hotel entrance earlier, when Lily had run into Tim without warning, Amelia had clearly seen the flash of surprise and joy in Lily’s eyes.
All those long speeches full of complaints were, in the end, just words that didn’t match her heart.
Amelia watched Lily’s retreating figure, almost like she was running away, and gently shook her head.
The room was quiet now. Amelia was alone.
She figured Lily wouldn’t be back anytime soon.
Amelia kicked off her shoes and fell onto the large bed. Before long, she was fast asleep.
This time, she slept deeply.

When she woke up again, it was the darkness that startled her awake.
Amelia sat up, confused for a moment, unsure what time it was or even what day it felt like.
She reached for her phone by the pillow. The white glow of the screen was a little harsh on her
eyes.
It was already past 8:00 p.m.
Among her unread messages was one from Lily, sent half an hour ago.
“We’re all downstairs at the lobby café, having coffee and waiting for you. When you wake up, just come down on your own.”
Amelia stared at the message for a while before slowly typing a reply, “I’m awake.”
Then she threw back the covers, got out of bed, and walked into the bathroom.
Cold tap water splashed against her face, washing away the last of her sleep and clearing her thoughts a little.
She changed into a simple, comfortable knit dress, grabbed her room key, and headed downstairs.
At the hotel lobby café, she spotted them right away.
By the window sat Mason, Tim, and Lily, gathered around a small round table.
Amelia assumed they were talking about where to have dinner or maybe what fun things there were to do in Lingchers.
But when she got closer, she realized that wasn’t it at all.
They were talking about Morningstar’s legal issues.
The first one to notice Amelia was Mason.
He lifted one hand and made a quick “pause” gesture.
The conversation stopped at once.
“Ms. Harlow, you really slept in this afternoon,” Lily said with a teasing smile. She lifted her coffee and took a sip, her eyes darting back and forth between Amelia and Mason.
Amelia didn’t miss the very suspicious red mark on Lily’s neck.

She shot Lily a look. She almost blurted out, didn’t you just sleep with someone too?
But she didn’t. She just hummed and walked over.

Everyone had to eat, after all.
The group left the hotel and waved down a taxi by the curb.
