His gaze was too open and too intense. It was as if the answer was already written in his waiting for her to read it.
eyes,
In the middle of the thick, awkward tension, Lily was the first to react. She broke the silence a
once.
“Congratulations!” she said, lighting up with excitement. “Oh my gosh, I’ve been dying to ask what you two really are this whole time! But I was scared I’d ruin the moment, so I kept holdir it in. It almost killed me!”
That shout snapped Amelia back to herself.
She looked at Lily and Tim across the table. Both of them were wearing teasing smiles. Her fac was still hot, but the panic in her chest slowly settled down.
At this point, being shy would only make things worse.
So, she decided to be honest. “Yes,” she said calmly. “You were going to find out eventually anyway.”
“Oh no, that won’t do,” Lily said, grinning. “Finding out later is not the same as finding out now. Come on, don’t give me a vague answer. Give us a proper introduction.”
It felt like Amelia had been pushed onto a stage.
Without thinking, her eyes drifted to Mason beside her. He was watching her quietly. His gaze was gentle and encouraging, full of trust. It was clear, no matter what she said or did, he would stand by her.
That was enough. Amelia took a breath and gathered her courage.
Under the table, she reached out and took Mason’s hand.
His palm was warm. When she grabbed him, his fingers moved slightly, as if he was holding himself back, letting her take the lead.
Amelia lifted her head. She cleared her throat, sitting up straight like a student giving a report. She announced seriously, “Let me introduce him. This is my boyfriend …”
She paused out of habit. She wanted to say his full name, but it felt too distant. In the end, the name she knew best slipped out.
“M–Mason.”

The moment she said it, even Amelia froze. Then, Lily and Tim burst into laughter. She finally realized how serious she had sounded, like she had just announced something official and important.
Lily laughed so hard she could barely stand it. “Amelia, anyone who didn’t know better would think you just called us here for a parent–teacher meeting!”
Tim joined in and said, “Yeah. Mason, Ms. Harlow says you’re her boyfriend. Do you agree? If you do, please nod.”
Amelia’s face turned bright red. Embarrassed and flustered, she reached over to cover Lily’s mouth. “Stop laughing!” she said. “If you keep laughing, I won’t talk to you anymore!”
Her words were fierce, but her body moved without thinking. She leaned closer to Mason, like she had found a safe place to hide.
Noticing her instinctive trust, Mason lifted his arm and gently pulled her into his chest. His broad shoulder blocked the playful looks from across the table.
He lowered his head and patted her back softly. “Don’t mind them,” he said in a calm, soothing voice.
Tim watched the scene unfold and clicked his tongue in amazement. He raised his glass toward Mason from afar, his face full of emotion. “I honestly never thought I’d live to see the day Mason fell in love,” he said with a sigh. “Just seeing this makes the whole trip worth it.”
“Really?” Lily’s curiosity was fully sparked. “He never dated before?”
In her mind, someone like Mason should have been surrounded by admirers nonstop.
“Oh! He never dated,” Tim said at once, slipping into gossip mode. His voice dropped, as if sharing a secret. “You have no idea. Back when we were studying overseas, the girls chasing him could line up from the south gate of campus all the way to the north gate. Sweet, innocent campus belle. Bold, fiery underclassmen. Love letters, girls waiting at the basketball court just to hand him water. You name it, he had it all.”
He got more animated as he spoke. “I used to think his standards were way too high. He probably looking for an angel. I figured he’d stay single forever. I had no idea-”
“Eat.”
Mason’s cool voice cut him off.
He shot Tim a calm but warning glance. It was clear he didn’t enjoy having these old stories brought up in front of Amelia.
Tim instantly got the message. He shrugged, made a quick zipping motion over his lips, and

The meal ended in a lively mood.

Once they stepped outside the restaurant, the cold air hit them, and everyone shivered.
Tim had planned ahead. He’d already had snow chains fitted onto the tall SUV, so even icy roads wouldn’t be a problem.
“Driving all the way around the lake will take too long,” Tim said, checking the map. “Why don’t we climb the small hill nearby instead? The timing’s perfect. If we reach the viewing platform at the top, we should catch the sunset.”
The suggestion passed without objection.
Amelia had always been sensitive to the cold. Before setting off, she wrapped herself up from head to toe. A fluffy hat. A thick scarf. Only her eyes were visible. On top of that, she wore an oversized down jacket, making her look round and cozy as she walked.
