Chapter 353 Just a Piece of Paper
* Finished
Outside the restaurant, the snow had eased a little. Fine flakes spun under the streetlights, adding a soft glow to the night.
The two women walked side by side on the sidewalk, heading toward a nearby drugstore.
“I really can’t stand him,” Lily complained, clearly annoyed. “Once he drank too much, he went crazy.” Amelia could hear it, though. Beneath the complaint was a sweetness Lily couldn’t hide.
Amelia smiled. Her curiosity finally won.
She turned and looked at her friend’s profile, then asked honestly, “Lily, to be real with you, I’m still surprised. I always thought you weren’t the type to decide on marriage so fast.”
In Amelia’s mind, Lily was free and independent. She enjoyed love, sure, but she always kept clear boundaries.
Marriage was never something she would rush into.
What Lily did today didn’t feel like her at all.
Lily gave a careless smile.
The streetlight reflected in her eyes, bright and clear.
“It was impulsive,” she admitted. “Tim said city hall closed at five thirty. If we didn’t go right then, we’d miss it. I just got caught up and said yes.”
She paused, then went on. “But once you think about it, it’s not a big deal. A marriage certificate is just a document. One sheet of paper. It’s not some kind of get–out–of–jail–free card. It proves we love each other right now, but it can’t promise forever. If one day Tim and I realize we’re not right for each other, we can always go get another piece of paper. And that’s that.”
Her tone was light, almost casual.
She was right. A marriage certificate was never a magic shield.
What was ironic was that Amelia had once treated it like a chain.
Amelia looked at her with quiet envy, a trace of sadness in her eyes. “I wish I had been as free as you back then.”
Her voice dropped, edged with bitter humor.
“If I had been, I wouldn’t have been trapped in that ridiculous marriage with Ethan for six

years.”
Those six years felt like a long, clear nightmare.

Holding onto a cold, lifeless certificate, drawing a cage around herself, and wasting her best
years.
Lily stopped walking and looked at her seriously.
“So, isn’t now better?” she asked, her gaze steady. “What’s done is done. Look at you now. You have Mason.”
At the sound of his name, Lily’s eyes turned playful.
“To be honest,” she said, lowering her voice, “ever since I learned who he was, I’ve been watching him when he’s around you.”
She leaned closer, like she was sharing a huge secret. “He looks cold on the outside, but his heart is completely with you. He always pretends not to care, but trust ten, his eyes are quietly glued to you. The way he looks at you is nothi anyone else.”

She nodded, very sure of herself. “My guess? He’s had feelings for you for a very, very long time.”
Amelia’s heart skipped a beat at her friend’s words.
Being called out so directly made her feel shy. At the same time, knowing that someone saw through her feelings and approved filled her with a soft sweetness. A light blush spread across her pale cheeks.
She lowered her head shyly, nudged a small pebble with her shoe, and murmured, “Yeah.”
Lily smiled knowingly at her reaction.
Amelia hesitated for a moment. Then she finally couldn’t hold it in anymore and shared the secret she had kept buried deep inside.
“Lily,” she whispered, leaning close to her ear, “actually, if Ethan hadn’t saved my life back then, I wouldn’t have put him on such a high pedestal. If I had never left my family, the one I truly liked all along would have been him.”
She didn’t need to say the name.
It was Mason–the tall, calm figure from her teenage years. Cool on the outside, yet someone she couldn’t help wanting to move closer to.

That feeling had never disappeared.
It had only been hidden, buried by fate and covered by accidents.
Lily froze for a second, then let out a long, understanding, “Oh.”

“That explains it!” she said. “No wonder the space between you two feels so intense. No one else can even step in. Now everything makes sense.”
“Mason is way more reliable than Ethan. Honestly, even more than Tim,” she added. “You being with him? I’m relieved.”
Those words–I’m relieved–made warmth spread through Amelia’s chest.
As they talked, they soon reached the pharmacy.
Bright lights filled the store. A pharmacist in a white coat was stocking shelves behind the
counter.
They quickly picked up hangover medicine for Tim.
Just as Amelia was about to pay and leave, Lily casually walked over to another shelf.
It was the personal care section.
Her eyes swept over the items. Then, like she’d done this a hundred times before, she picked up a neatly packaged box of pink protection and dropped it into the basket.
Amelia’s eyes went wide.
She stared at the bright pink box, then at Lily’s completely calm face. Her words came out shaky. “You guys … tonight… you’re still going to…?”
