Chapter 396 What Couldn’t Be Reclaimed

Ethan drove Hannah away, but he still couldn’t bring Amelia back.

Ethan couldn’t tolerate a single trace of Hannah lingering in the villa. Even more unbearable were the reminders everywhere of how he had once hurt and neglected Amelia.

Irritation surged as he closed his eyes and called the house steward.

“Bring people over immediately. Replace everything in the villa. All the furniture, curtains, carpets. Everything.”

After hanging up, Ethan slumped back against the couch, breathing heavily, as if only by tearing everything down and starting over could his remorse–ridden heart gain even a moment of peace.

Amelia knew nothing of what was happening on Ethan’s end.

To her, the world suddenly felt much quieter.

Since their last bitter encounter, Ethan hadn’t harassed her again for several days.

The pace of her new job was fast, but it filled her with a sense of fulfillment she’d never known before.

She threw herself into the work wholeheartedly and quickly took charge of several new projects.

One of them involved an especially demanding client. The previous team had followed up for a long time without success.

Tim handed the case to her, half expecting nothing more than a trial run.

Although Tim used his connections to secure her a direct meeting with the client’s decision–makers, it was ultimately her original, striking proposal that convinced the notoriously picky client.

Tim was delighted. He immediately announced, “Dinner is on me tonight. A company–wide gathering to celebrate landing a major project and to officially welcome Ms. Harlow.”

After announcing the venue, Tim walked over to Amelia on purpose and added pointedly, “By the way, tonight’s dinner allows plus–ones.”

He even gave her a knowing wink.

Almost instantly, Amelia thought of Mason.

The idea of bringing Mason to a company dinner made her heart pound uncontrollably.

She picked up her phone but couldn’t bring herself to message him about joining her that evening.

She could already imagine her colleagues‘ shock if they discovered her boyfriend was the company’s elusive top boss.

As she stared blankly at her screen, Mason’s call came through.

Amelia jumped, as if she had been caught doing something wrong, and answered guiltily.

“Hello.”

“Are you busy?” Mason’s warm, magnetic voice came through the line.

“No,” Amelia steadied herself. “Are you done with work?”

“Yes. Just finished a meeting. What time do you get off? I’ll come pick you up.”

Amelia bit her lip. After a brief pause, she decided to brush it aside.

“Well, I have something on tonight. You don’t need to come get me.”

There was a moment of silence on the other end before Mason asked lightly, “You have plans?”

“Yes,” Amelia replied quickly, her voice dropping unconsciously. “The company has a dinner tonight.”

After saying it, she waited nervously for his reaction.

Mason only gave a soft acknowledgment.

Amelia felt both relieved and inexplicably disappointed.

She hurried to add, “I’ll take a taxi home after. You don’t need to worry.”

She didn’t mention inviting him along, and Mason, as if by unspoken agreement, didn’t press further.

“Alright,” he said gently. “Be careful, and don’t drink too much.”

“Okay.”

After ending the call, Amelia stared at her phone, her chest feeling oddly heavy.

It seemed she had wronged Mason again.

They were openly a couple, and she had even promised that she would never hide their relationship because of his status.

Yet now, everything she was doing was exactly that. Hiding.

Even with the Everetts, she had concealed the truth from Nora and from Evan, afraid to openly acknowledge that they were together.

Now at work, she was instinctively keeping him outside her own circle.
