“It’s beautiful,” Amelia said softly. Then, she asked with concern, “How’s Evan’s leg? Is the treatment going okay?”

Mason seemed to have moved into a spot sheltered from the wind. The rushing sound faded.

He turned the camera toward himself.

The night and falling snow became his backdrop.

Under the faint glow of the phone screen, his handsome features looked sharply defined.

A few playful snowflakes landed in his hair and melted almost instantly.

He looked at Amelia through the screen, his gaze focused and gentle. “He’s doing alright. After the checkup this afternoon, they started the first needle treatment. It was painful, but Evan… he held on.”

“He’s exhausted now and already asleep.”

Amelia’s heart tightened as she listened.

“What about your mom and Hayden?” she asked.

“They’re inside watching TV,” Mason said, a faint smile tugging at his lips, like a kid sharing a secret. “My mom stayed with him so he wouldn’t feel bored. So… none of them noticed it was snowing outside. I was the first one to see it.”

The way he said it felt like he was telling her, I saw something beautiful first, and I wanted you to see it with me.

“It looks like it’ll snow in the city soon too. The temperature already dropped tonight,” she said.

Just then, Nora’s voice faintly came through the phone from inside the house. “Mason?”

Amelia spoke up right away, “Your mom’s calling you. Go inside before you catch a cold. I’m getting ready for bed too.”

“Okay,” Mason replied. He did not hang up right away. He looked at her for a long moment, then said, “It’s getting colder at night. Turn the heat up and don’t kick the blankets off.”

“I know,” Amelia said with a smile.

The call ended, but this time, Amelia did not feel lonely at all.

She put her phone down contentedly and got ready for bed.
