“Amelia… Grandma passed away.”
Amelia froze in place, her mind going blank.

“…When did it happen?” After a long moment, she finally spoke, her voice dry and tight.
“Last night.
“She woke up for a bit, and everyone thought she was getting better. But it was just her final burst of strength. She passed away later that night.”
Fiona’s face appeared in Amelia’s mind–lined with age, yet always gentle and warm.
Even though her ties with the Rowes were long broken, a deep ache rose in her chest.
Amelia felt sorrow, but all she could say was a weak comfort. “My condolences.”
“Hmm,” Ethan replied quietly. After a brief silence, as if steadying himself, he spoke again, his voice full of pleading.
“Amelia, Grandma always thought of you. So … I hope you can come and see her off one last time as her granddaughter–in–law.”
Amelia’s first reaction was to refuse.
That title felt painfully ironic and awkward to her now.
But Ethan quickly added, desperation clear in his voice, “Please. It was Grandma’s last wish.”
Amelia remembered how Fiona had always hoped she and Ethan would remarry.
Even if she couldn’t grant that wish, she couldn’t deny an old woman’s sincerity.
After all, the dead deserved respect.
Between reason and emotion, emotion won.
She took a slow breath and replied quietly, “Okay… I’ll go.”
After hanging up, Amelia stood there for a long time. The mountain breeze brushed her face, but it couldn’t clear the mess in her heart.
She turned and went back inside. Mason was sitting by the window reading. Noticing how pale she was, he set the book aside and asked gently, “What happened?”
Amelia walked over and told him everything about the call.
She watched his expression carefully, feeling a bit uneasy.
She expected him to be at least a little upset or even angry about Ethan’s request,

But to her surprise, Mason only thought for a moment. His deep eyes showed no emotion.
Then he reached out, took her cold fingers, and said softly, “I’ll take you back.”
Seeing Amelia’s shock, Mason continued explaining, “Fiona lived a legendary life. Now that she’s gone, it’s right to show respect. Going with you makes sense.”
His calm understanding cased all of Amelia’s worry.
She squeezed his hand and shook her head.
“There’s no need for you to go,” she said firmly. “Evan’s needle treatment is at a critical stage. He needs you here. You should stay. I’ll go back alone.”
She didn’t want her personal matters to delay Evan’s treatment.
Besides, if Mason appeared with her at the Rowes‘ funeral, it would only create awkward situations and
unnecessary rumors.
Seeing how determined she was, Mason knew she had thought it through.
After a moment, he nodded. “Alright. I’ll have my assistant arrange a driver for you.”
With the plan set, Amelia started packing.
She explained things to Nora, Evan, and Kaia, only saying she needed to return early to pay respects to an elder.
Everyone understood. Nora even held Amelia’s hand and reminded her again and again to be careful and not to grieve too deeply.
No one showed the slightest discomfort about her return to the Rowes.
That open trust and acceptance warmed Amelia’s heart.
At the same time, the Rowe Estate was anything but peaceful.
