a marriage that had never had any real foundation of love. The ending had been miserable, but not surprising.
Lily and Tim were different. They clearly loved each other.
And yet even two people who loved each other that much had still ended up here, with one problem after another, the distance between them only growing wider.
The thought filled Amelia with a sudden, quiet dread. She couldn’t help wondering whether she and Mason might one day become like this too if they got married.
Maybe after the first rush of sweetness faded, they would start fighting over trivial things, worn down little by little by ordinary life until the passion was gone, and they became strangers who knew each other better than anyone, drifting farther apart with each passing day.

Just as she was lost in those anxious thoughts, her phone screen lit up. It was a message from
Mason.
“Back yet?”
Amelia replied with a simple yes.
“There’s a surprise hidden in your closet. Go look.”
A surprise?
Puzzled, Amelia climbed off the bed, walked to the closet, and pulled open the door. Hanging beside her clothes was a large white box.
Curious, she took it down and opened it.
Inside was a brand–new professional digital art set, resting there quietly. From the drawing tablet to the pressure–sensitive pen, every piece was the latest model she had been wanting for a very long time.

His voice on the other end sounded steadier than before. “Amelia, the lawyer will be putting Grandma’s will into effect tomorrow. Find some time so we can go handle the transfer paperwork.”
As if he had guessed she might hesitate, he added, “The sooner we finish it, the less chance there is for more trouble.”
There was a trace of concern in that reminder, and Amelia found she couldn’t refuse. After a brief silence, she said, “Okay.”
The moment she hung up, she called the lawyer Mason had introduced her to earlier, explained the situation in a few concise sentences, and asked him to go with her the next day.
At the agreed time the following day, Amelia arrived at the law firm. The moment she pushed open the heavy glass door, she spotted Ethan sitting on a couch in the reception area.
He seemed thinner, and darker too, but the most striking change was his hair. The carefully styled look was gone, replaced by a close, neat cut. Without his bangs, his sharply defined features were fully exposed, making him look more severe, more grounded, and distinctly harder around the edges.
When he saw Amelia and the lawyer behind her, Ethan stood up and simply gave a calm nod, with no unnecessary small talk.
The paperwork went smoothly. When Amelia stated that she intended to donate the portion of the estate she had inherited, a complicated emotion flickered through Ethan’s eyes. In the end, though, he said nothing and accepted her decision in silence.
While they waited for the documents to be printed, he suddenly said, almost casually, “I’m going abroad in a few days.”
Amelia looked up at him.
“To see Isla, and to take my mother on a trip so she can clear her head.” With his eyes lowered, he looked at the cup in front of him and spoke in an even tone. “Isla’s adjusted pretty well over there. She’s started opening up.”
A genuine smile appeared on Amelia’s face. “That’s good.”
Good for Isla, and good for him too.
