Mason treated her like she wasn’t even there. His eyes shifted to Miles, who had been shrinking into himself from the moment this started, wishing he could turn invisible. He issued his final order.
“First thing tomorrow morning, help Wilda and Ms. Jewell move their things out.
“If it’s too much for you to handle, get help. But if you can’t get it done–or if I find out you’re dragging your feet and working against me–then you can pack up your own things and go with them. Understood?”
Mason was making something perfectly clear, in the most direct terms possible, to everyone in that house -including the old man who had worked for the Everetts his entire life. He, Mason, was the only one whose word counted under this roof.
And his line in the sand was Amelia.
Miles was drenched in cold sweat under the weight of Mason’s gaze. He didn’t dare hesitate. He bowed his head and answered immediately. “Yes, Mr. Mason. I… I understand.”
Only then did Mason give a small nod of satisfaction.
He wasn’t wasting another second in that house.
He turned, picked the suit jacket back up from Miles’s arm, and walked out to go find Amelia.
Behind him, Wilda was shaking with rage, and Phoebe’s face was twisted with jealousy. They broke into a futile, hysterical storm of curses aimed at his back.
On the road.
Mason pushed the car as fast as it would go. The luxury sedan cut through the empty mountain road like a bolt of lightning.
The world outside the windows rushed past in blurred streaks of light and shadow, much like the chaos inside his head.
He kept calling her, over and over.
And each time, all he got was the same cold, mechanical woman’s voice. “The number you are trying to reach is currently unavailable. Please try again later…”
He knew she must have silenced her phone.
Any time Amelia wanted to be alone, or her emotions were bad enough that she didn’t want anyone reaching her, she did this.
And he could also guess where she had gone. She’d gone to their new house.
At the thought, the hard line of his jaw softened slightly. But his foot pressed harder on the accelerator.
The car tore down the mountain and merged into the city traffic. The dazzling neon light flickered through the windows, tracing across his sharp profile. The moment the car came to a clean stop in the

He rode the private elevator up, its mirror–bright walls reflecting a face that was almost expressionless but unable to hide the urgency underneath.
The elevator doors opened.
He walked up to the familiar door and unlocked it with his fingerprint.
The door swung open, and Mason saw her right away.
There was a small, slender figure curled up on the couch, fast asleep.
Her suitcase had been abandoned by the doorway. Her shoes were kicked off in different directions. A single throw pillow was all she’d draped over herself. She looked impossibly fragile.
In that instant, the heart that had been hammering in Mason’s chest the entire drive over finally–slowly- settled.
He closed the door softly behind him and walked over.
He hadn’t turned on any of the lights. The city’s neon glow was spilling in through the huge floor–to- ceiling windows, laying a soft, hazy halo across her sleeping face.
Mason crouched down in front of her and studied her carefully in the dim light.
Even in her sleep, her brow was still faintly furrowed, as if she couldn’t quite rest there either.
He lifted a hand, wanting to smooth the crease between her brows–and stopped just short of actually touching her.
He didn’t want to wake her.
Mason just stayed where he was, watching her.
He was debating whether to carry her to the bedroom so she could sleep more comfortably.
Maybe he was staring too hard. Or maybe, somewhere underneath, she sensed he was there.
The woman on the couch stirred. Her eyelashes fluttered, and then her eyes opened slowly.
She was still groggy with sleep.
But the moment she made out his face, the haze in her eyes cleared, replaced by something settled and safe, like a piece clicking into place.
“You came.”
Mason’s throat bobbed. A soft, doting laugh came out of him.
He leaned down and pressed his lips lightly against her cheek.
“So, Ms. Harlow, how was your game of running away from home?”

Amelia blinked at him for a beat, like her brain was still rebooting. A few seconds passed before she caught his meaning.
“Not bad,” she said, her eyes crinkling, a mischievous little smile slipping into her voice. “The place is a bit empty, so the sleep wasn’t exactly restful. But…”
She dragged the last word out on purpose, looking up at his face so close to hers, and added at her own lazy pace,
