Mason watched the soft curve of her brows and smiling eyes, a low chuckle escaping him as a quiet, pleasant resonance spread through his chest.
He remained in his half–kneeling position, naturally resting his head against her lap, his arms wrapping around her slender waist.
“Alright,” he murmured, his voice slightly muffled as his face pressed against her side, “has Ms. Harlow finished letting off her steam now?”
Amelia was caught off guard by the sudden intimacy. For a brief moment, she froze before a gentle warmth spread through her heart.
She lifted her hand, her fingers threading through his soft, short hair, lightly massaging his scalp, trying to ease the lingering fatigue between his brows.
The lighting was dim, and the atmosphere was just right. A quiet stillness flowed between them.
But reality didn’t disappear just because of a fleeting moment of tenderness.
After a short silence, Amelia spoke softly, “Won’t your grandmother say anything about you coming to see me?”
Mason tightened his arms around her slightly, not even bothering to lift his eyelids, his tone full of indifference. “Since when has she ever stopped talking?”
Amelia thought about it and realized he was right.
Ever since Wilda found out about their relationship, her opposition had never ceased.
Amelia understood that Mason was protecting her in his own way. But precisely because she understood, she didn’t want to become the cause of a rift between him and his grandmother.
She sighed softly and gently tried to persuade him, “I’m doing fine staying here alone. How about this, I’ll stay here for a few days first. Once your grandmother and the others leave, I’ll move back. You should go back to the estate. Otherwise, she’ll think I deliberately lured you here to drive a wedge between you two.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Mason lifted his head. His deep, dark eyes shone sharply in the dim light.
‘Amelia, say that again?”
Caught off guard by his sudden reaction, she hesitated but still held onto her stance. “I mean it. I don’t
want to…
“You don’t want to? So you’d rather carry everything on your own again and push me away, is that it?”
Her heart jolted.
Seeing her slightly pale face, the hostility in Mason’s eyes gradually faded as he realized his tone had been
too harsh.

He sat up and pulled her fully into his arms, his voice softening to an almost tender whisper. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have snapped at you. But Amelia, listen to me.”
He cupped her face, making her look directly at him.
“We chose the design sketches and every detail of the interior of this house together. The lady of the house is already here. So, there’s no reason for me, the man of the house, to be absent.
“And I promised you, wherever you are, that’s where I’ll be. That promise will always stand.”
Amelia looked at the stubborn devotion in his eyes. Something in her chest softened and ached, her eyes growing slightly warm.
She sighed, knowing she couldn’t win against him.
Just then, she gently pushed him and sat up straight, saying, “Oh, right, there’s something I need to tell you. Tim has a classmate who introduced a project to the Stardale Group. It’s from an overseas company. But lately, the online communication hasn’t been very smooth. So they generously invited me to go abroad for an in–person meeting, and they’ll cover all travel expenses. Pretty generous.
“I was thinking… maybe I should accept? Go for ten days or half a month. It would also help avoid this situation perfectly. That way, you wouldn’t have to strain your relationship with your grandmother because of me.”
It really did sound like the perfect solution.
It could resolve the current tension while also advancing work.
But after hearing this, Mason’s brows instinctively furrowed. He immediately caught the key detail.
“What classmate?”
He and Tim had studied at the same top university, in the same major, and were close enough to practically share everything.
Their networks were almost identical.
Yet recently, he hadn’t heard anything about any classmate introducing an overseas project.
Amelia shook her head, a little uncertain. “I don’t know exactly who. Tim just mentioned it briefly. You’ve always trusted him enough to leave the company in his hands, right? So I trust him too.”
Mason nodded, the crease between his brows easing slightly. “Tim is definitely trustworthy.”
He paused for a moment, then looked at the hopeful expression in her eyes before finally saying, “But a project appearing out of nowhere like this, and with so many odd details, feels off. Don’t rush to agree. Let me find out exactly what’s going on first.”
