Kaia paused for a moment, then added, “Also, my grandfather hasn’t been in great health. I want to bring him to Harborville so he’ll be closer to me. It’ll be easier to take care of him that way.”
Her explanation sounded too casual, which only made Amelia more suspicious.
“Is that really all?” Amelia still felt like it was too sudden. She looked straight into Kaia’s eyes and asked carefully, “Did something happen while I was away?”
Kaia’s hand, which had been turning the herbs, paused for a split second.
The pause was so brief it could have been missed, but Amelia caught it.
Kaia then looked up, still wearing that gentle but distant smile, and denied it firmly. “No. Everything’s been normal. Evan’s been getting better every day. If you don’t believe me, you can ask Mrs. Everett.”
She even brought up Nora to back up what she said.
At that point, Amelia couldn’t press further. If she did, it would start to feel like she was prying into someone else’s private life.
When Amelia returned to the Everett Residence courtyard, she happened to see the new caregiver, Ruth, pushing Evan back from outside.
The wheelchair rolled slowly past the entrance of Preston’s Courtyard, where the scent of herbs lingered in the air. Evan’s gaze remained fixed straight ahead, not shifting even slightly, as if there was no one behind that gate worth looking back for.
His cold, distant demeanor was a stark contrast to the quiet, unspoken closeness he and Kaia had shared during Christmas.
That evening, Hayden came home from school.
Seeing Amelia and Mason made him especially happy. He chattered nonstop about funny things that had happened at school, bringing some life back into the otherwise quiet house.
Mason had been away from the company for several days, and a mountain of work was waiting for him. After dinner, he went straight into the study.
Amelia stayed in the living room with Nora and Hayden, sitting on the couch and watching TV together.
Halfway through, Nora got up to take a shower. Once it was just the two of them left in the

living room, Hayden suddenly leaned in close to Amelia and whispered, “I’m really glad you guys came. I feel like Dad hasn’t been very happy lately.”
Amelia’s heart stirred, and she asked gently, “Why do you think that?”
Hayden frowned, looking troubled, and shook his head. “I can’t really explain it. Maybe it’s just grown–up stuff we don’t understand.”
He sighed, then added, “Ms. Preston’s the same way. The two of them don’t really talk much anymore. It’s like they had a fight or something.”
Children spoke without filters, but sometimes they saw things most clearly.
Amelia instinctively glanced toward Evan’s room, worry rising in her chest.
Late at night, Amelia woke up feeling thirsty and quietly went downstairs to get a glass of water.
The living room was completely dark, with only moonlight spilling in through the windows, outlining the furniture in faint shapes.
After drinking some water, she was about to head back upstairs when she noticed, out of the corner of her eye, a bright light still shining through the crack of Evan’s bedroom door at the end of the hallway.
Memories surfaced in her mind.
Back when she had first arrived at the Everett Residence, she had been sensitive and insecure. Whenever something upset her, Evan had always been the first to notice. Like a real older brother, he would bring her a cup of warm milk and gently ask what was wrong.
With his steadiness and patience, he had slowly helped heal the wounds in her heart.
Now it was her turn to look out for him.
Thinking that, Amelia walked over to Evan’s door with her glass in hand.
She raised her hand and knocked lightly.
There was no response from inside.
Confused, Amelia knocked two more times. It was still completely silent.
That was when she noticed the door wasn’t fully closed. It was slightly ajar.
A sense of unease crept over her.
She lowered her voice and called out, “Evan?”
