Chapter 696 The Meeting
Lenny’s expression cleared all at once as the explanation landed.
He laughed, warm and unguarded. “So that was Mason Everett! I thought as much. A man with that kind of presence and bearing, you just know he’s someone significant.”
While the pleasantries went back and forth between the three of them, Hannah played the par of the attentive, well-behaved daughter without missing a beat.
She stood quietly at Lenny’s side, listening with an expression of mild, pleasant interest.

erything she’d managed to build would have collapsed in an instant.
She extended her hand with a bright, easy smile. “Mr. Clem, I’ve heard so much about you. And Amelia, it’s been too long. You look absolutely wonderful.”
Amelia looked at the warmth radiating off of Hannah and felt a deep, quiet revulsion that she kept perfectly off her face. She gave a measured nod in return. “It has been a while.”
Tim handled it with his usual easy fluency, shaking Hannah’s hand and smiling. “Ms. Gray, you’re very kind.”
After the brief exchange, Tim signaled the driver to take the luggage, then turned to Lenny and Hannah with a composed, welcoming air.
“Mr. Jewell, Ms. Gray, the car is ready. We’ll get you both to your hotel first. You’ve traveled a long way and I imagine you could use some rest. Mr. Everett has already reserved a table for this evening to welcome you properly.”
Lenny gave a satisfied nod. “Much appreciated.”
Throughout all of it, Hannah had been a picture of composed, refined propriety. She hadn’t shown even a hint of hostility toward Amelia, hadn’t made any attempt to show off or assert herself, and had stayed closeted enny’s side with the quiet, dignified demeanor of someone who had been raised

Tim watched the dark sedan carry the two of them away, and once it had fully disappeare from view he turned back with an expression that couldn’t quite settle on bemused or suspicious.
He rubbed his chin. “Is she a completely different person now? Because that was not the Hannah I remember.”
Amelia’s mouth curved into something that wasn’t quite a smile.
“She’s probably very careful about what she lets slip when Lenny can see her. She’s wearing t Jewell me now. She has to look the part, or she risks giving herself away.”

don’t really have close friends there anymore. When it comes down to it, being here with you and Tim is better.”
Tim had been pouring drinks for Mason across the table and caught the last part of what Lily said. The corner of his mouth lifted. He came over and tucked the shawl more snugly around her shoulder with the quiet care of someone who did these small things without thinking. “Exactly. No reason to be somewhere unfamiliar on your own. The medical care here is excellent. Just stay put and stop worrying so much.”
