She had anticipated many things. She had not anticipated Ethan walking Isla directly through
that door.
There was no way she could deny the child now.
In the span of a heartbeat, Hannah buried every trace of her panic.
Her eyes went red at the rims.
“Dad,” she said, her voice catching in her throat, “this is my daughter. Isla.” She didn’t finish the sentence before she crossed the room quickly and pulled Isla into a tight embrace. “Baby, why didn’t you tell me you were coming? I missed you so much.”
Lenny’s eyebrows rose dramatically, and the shock on his face looked very much like a man who had been genuinely blindsided by the sudden appearance of a granddaughter. But if anyone had been watching the particular quality of the light behind his lowered lashes, they might have noticed something else there entirely.
On the other side of the table, the remaining guests had collectively shifted into riveted spectator mode.
Lily’s jaw had all but come unhinged. She had expected a dinner. She had not expected a live production of this caliber.
She reached under the table and jabbed Amelia in the arm, dropping her voice to an urgent murmur. “Did you see that? Ethan just showed up with the daughter Hannah abandoned. Right in front of Lenny. This is incredible.”
Amelia’s own thoughts were moving fast and tangled.
“I honestly had no idea he was coming,” she murmured back.
Her gaze drifted sideways to Mason without her fully deciding to look.
Since the moment Ethan had appeared, Mason had maintained the same composed, unhurried expression he always wore. But he had personally gotten up to open that door, which told her everything she needed to know about how surprised he actually was.
He’d known. And he hadn’t said a word to her beforehand.
A deeper layer of surprise moved through her. When had Mason and Ethan even connected?
These were two men who, as far as she’d known, had no meaningful point of intersection. And yet somehow they had coordinated this entire evening between them without a word to anyone.
While everyone was occupied with their own private calculations, Isla had begun to pull back

from Hannah’s embrace.
The time apart hadn’t been long, but Hannah’s sudden affection felt strange and uncomfortable to her. She wrinkled her nose slightly and said, in a flat, honest child’s voice, “Mom. You’re squeezing too hard.”
Hannah loosened her hold, kept her smile in place through sheer force of will, and looked at Ethan. “Come in, both of you. Sit down.”
She turned back immediately and took Isla’s hand, steering her toward Lenny’s side of the table, trying to recover some control of the situation.
“Dad, I’m sorry. I wasn’t trying to keep her from you. Isla is my daughter from my first marriage. Mr. Rowe has been helping me look after her. She’s been enrolled at a boarding
ol overseas, and I had no idea she’d come back like this…”
