Chapter 699 More Lies
Her explanation had gaps in it wide enough to walk through, but she pushed forward at speed, trying to plaster the whole thing over before anyone could look too closely.
Before Lenny could respond, Faye, who had been quietly watching from the sideline, spoke up in that gentle voice of hers.
“Sweetheart, if you have a daughter this age, why didn’t you mention her to us from the start?”
Hannah’s performance of maternal warmth nearly cracked under the pressure of that question. What was she supposed to say? That she had resented Isla for not being Ethan’s child, and resented her even more for siding against her at the worst possible moment, and that the combination of those two things had made her not want anything to do with the girl?
Saying any of that would tear apart everything she’d worked to build in front of Lenny.
A dozen responses flashed through her mind in the span of a breath. When Hannah lifted her head again, she quickly buried the hostility beneath tearful vulnerability, and the fragile, pitiful expression was back in place.
She turned toward Lenny rather than face Faye’s question directly, her voice trembling at the edges. “Dad, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t trying to hide her from you. It’s just that everything since coming back to you has felt like a dream. My head hasn’t been clear. I hadn’t figured out how to bring Isla up yet.”
She reached down and took Isla’s hand, trying to keep the scene running on her terms. “Isla, this is your grandfather. Say hello.”
Isla looked at Lenny with calm, unfamiliar eyes and said nothing.
The time she’d spent apart from Hannah, and the steadier environment she’d grown in since, had loosened both her dependence and her fear.
At this moment, she simply didn’t understand what was happening around her.
She tilted her head with honest, uncomplicated curiosity. “Mom, you said my grandfather was already dead. Why do I have a new one now?”
The blood drained from Hannah’s face.
The lie she had fed her daughter to keep her quiet had just been delivered back to her, word for word, in front of everyone.
saying things like that!”

It was a measured, gracious sound. He waved a hand and smoothed things over. “Children say all kinds of things. She’s young. Now that everyone’s here, let’s eat first and sort the rest out after.”
The smile on his face was as composed and refined as ever, but his eyes held nothing like warmth behind them. They were still and deep in a way that made the room feel just slightly colder.
Ethan leaned over and gestured to Isla with a small, easy wave.
Isla immediately extracted herself from Hannah’s suffocating grip and trotted over to sit beside him like someone who’d been waiting for permission.
The awkward scene finally settled down, and Mason walked back and took his seat beside Amelia.
Amelia pressed her fingers quietly against the back of his hand. “Is there something you’d like to explain to me?”
Mason felt the warmth of her touch and let the corner of his mouth lift. He lowered his voice just enough. “Explain what? That tonight turned out to be a lively gathering?”
Amelia recognized the deflection immediately and was not charmed by it. She puffed her cheeks out very slightly and made a sound in her throat that clearly communicated consequences. “Fine. We can talk about it properly when we get home.”
Lenny’s smooth intervention had restored the surface appearance of civility, and the servers quietly stepped in, clearing the cooled appetizers and replacing them with the fragrant main
courses.
Lenny’s gaze settled on Amelia with easy warmth. “Ms. Harlow, are you free tomorrow? I’d like to show you the house where Demi used to live.”
Amelia’s hand paused briefly on her fork, then she gave a composed nod. “Of course.”
Before Hannah’s sharp gaze could even complete its trajectory across the table, Mason spoke with unhurried calm. “I’ll be with her.”
Hannah watched Mason’s attentiveness toward Amelia and felt the fury building to a pressure behind her eyes she could barely contain.
She was convinced that Ethan showing up tonight with Isla had been Amelia’s doing. The timing was simply too deliberate, landing right in the middle of her reunion with Lenny.
If Amelia had humiliated her, then she wasn’t going to sit here and let Amelia enjoy the
