Chapter 105
Kieran POV
I was looking at the wedding schedule when James knocked and came in.

The wedding coordinator was expecting a reply about the final touches. I had been meaning to review it for forty minutes and had reviewed nothing.
He set a folder on the desk. “We have the preliminary report.”
I looked up. James knew better than to bring me something incomplete unless it was crucial and demanded my attention.
I moved the wedding schedule aside. “Sit down.”
He did.
He walked me through it methodically. The fire at St. Mira’s wasn’t accidental. A chemical accelerant was discovered. The pattern of ignition points indicated whoever had prepared it knew what they were doing.
“This wasn’t improvised,” I said.
“Someone planned it. The preparation would have taken time. Possibly some days or weeks even.”
I looked at the photographs in the folder.Someone had prepared this while Denise was teaching children in those rooms. They had done the preparation, set the conditions, and waited.
I closed that section of the folder. “Have you been able to trace the where the accelerant came from?”
James moved to the next section. The procurement had moved through three or four possible layers of intermediaries. The second layer of intermediaries included a Cyrus Silvermoon-linked contact that he had recognized.
“How sure are you?” I stared at the photo again, hoping to find something.
James was quiet for a moment. ” Absolutely confident it was arson. I’m not completely certain on the Cyrus link.”
“What are you saying?”
“Knowing and proving are two different things.”
I understood the distinction. “What about Lyra?”
James met my eyes. “We know she was in contact with Cyrus around the relevant period. We can’t link her to anything for now.”
I thought about Lyra. I remembered her sitting near Cyrus in a context she hadn’t adequately explained.

Thinking back, over last few weeks, she had placed herself close enough to Denise in a manner that tried t to raise suspicion. There are no coincidences and the investigation was forcing to ask a question that I didn’t really answer the first time.
Did she stop or had she simply found a way to do it that allowed her more distance from the outcomes I didn’t know and I never answered a question I didn’t know the answer to.
I thought out loud. “If Lyra arranged this and then stopped it but it still happened, what does that tell us?”
James thought about it. “That she may have lost control of the operation.”
I added. “Or that she didn’t stop it.”
“Yes. Both scenarios are entirely possible.”
I thought about what would happen if I confronted her now.
She would deny it, that much was certain. While others panicked when backed into a corner, Lyra was one of the cool ones. Confronting her now without solid evidence would have her destroying the evidence that linked her to the crime.
That wasn’t a chance I was willing to take especially when Denise was almost the victim.
“Send everything you have found so far to with Marcus Webb. And I do mean everything. Leave nothing out.”
“Do you want him to do anything with it?”
I looked at James “Not yet. Not until we have more.”
“There’s one more thing,” James said.
I waited.
“One of the intermediaries dropped out of the network about a week after the fire. Total radio silence since then.”
“Disappeared or removed?”
“It’s hard to say at this point. Also someone accessed the disposable account used for the chemical purchase three days after the fire and deleted part of the transaction history.”
I looked at him. “They were cleaning up.”
“Yes but they didn’t do a good job of it.”
My mind worked it over. Someone tried to erase evidence but didn’t do a good job because of time or ability which meant there was a chance to catch the perp when they made a second attempt.
“Keep watching Cyrus’s contacts. If someone starts talking to the dead-end contact again, I want to know immediately.”

“And Lyra?”
“Keep watching her but be discreet about it.”
