Chapter 104

Denise POV

Rosaline came in with three strangers.

The first was the wedding coordinator. It was easy to spot her. The folder, subtle professional air and the energy of dealing with other people’s anxiety gave her away. Not to mention the fabric samples and already prepared questions her face was posed to ask.

The other two held nothing on their person. They were an elderly couple who were used to welding their authority that they didn’t bother to make it obvious to any room they entered.

“They are part of the ceremonial council and here for the compatibility assessment.”

I had been expecting this. Rosaline had sent me a crash course about it. The marriage had two layers: The formal wedding for the prying human eyes who didn’t know any better and the main ceremony which held more weight. It sounded theoretical till this moment.

Standing in front of the couple whose job was to evaluate my wolf made it too real for my comfort.

“Shall we sit?” the elder woman asked but the tone of her voice made it clear it was more of a command than a question.

The coordinator excused herself to the dining table leaving me with Rosaline and the two council members. The room instantly felt smaller.

Councillor Vael, the elder womn began methodically.

“How long have you been on suppressants?”

“Since I was fourteen or so. Can’t really recall.” I said.

“You been on it consistently?”

“Yes.”

She nodded. “Have you experienced recurring reactions around Alpha presence? Like uncontrolled shifts in scent sensitivity?”

My mind instantly went to the hospital room and the penthouse where I picked up Eli’s and Alyssa’s scent beneath his, and the way my instincts had analyzed them before I’d made a single conscious decision.

“Some sensitivity but nothing out of the usual.”

The elder man, Councillor Adare, watched me with an intensity that unsettled me a bit.

“St. Mira’s,” he concluded.

“Yes.”

“Have you lived in a pack society before?”

“No.”

He nodded slowly like the answer was the explanation to some mystery he had.

Councillor Vael asked me to stand near the window. The light was better there, she said. I stood where she indicated wishing the examination to be over soon. All the year I had spent making my wolf absent was made redundant as she stood closer to me.

“Your natural markers are still present under the suppressants,” she said, after a moment.

“It is stronger than I expected for someone your age given the consistent level of suppression.”

“Is that a problem?”

“No. Your wolf hasn’t been dormant just contained.”

Rather than reduce or diminish it, I just caged it with chemical walls.

The slight increase in the air pressure told me without looking that Kieran had entered the room.

Councillor Vael asked us to stand near each other.

“This doesn’t require anything from either of you except standing.”

I stood beside Kieran close enough to get his scent. He looked straight at the councilors, his face revealing nothing like it always did when he faced constituted pack authority.

I focused my attention on the window and my wolf did something I hadn’t given it permission to do. It settled as I kept my eyes on the window.

Councillor Adare made a small sound of acknowledgement.

Vael spoke to Rosaline. “The compatibility markers are strong.”

She said it to Rosaline; I turned to look her and she wasn’t surprised, not even a bit.

Kieran left the room when the assessment concluded. The council members a brief and kow exchange with each other that I was not meant to follow, and then Councillor Vael looked at me directly.

“Compatibility doesn’t mean consent.”

“I know,” I said.

She seemed satisfied with my response. “Good. The assessment will be recorded. The pack ceremony can proceed as scheduled.”

They left with the coordinator.

I turned to Rosaline. “How long did you know?” I asked.

She understood immediately. “I had a feeling, today was the confirmation.”

“Did Kieran know?”
