CHAPTER 107
DENISE POV

I arrived early to the venue, an old habit of mine. Arriving early afforded me the change to get a feel of the room and identify the exits in case I ever needed it.
It was a learned reflex that had its roots at St. Mira
The venue was warm and arranged with the intention of making it comfortable for people and not for
show.
I stood near the entrance to start counting when I stopped myself. These people chose to be here and that made all the difference.
Lena was the first to arrive. She walked over to me with a bag. “You look better than the last time I saw you.”
“The last time you saw me I was in a hospital bed.”
“My point exactly.” She held out the bag.
I opened it at the table she indicated. I blinked at the contents: They were things I had mentioned absentmindedly during a conversation. At the bottom of the bag was something that could only have come from a conversation she’d had with someone who knew me.
“How did you know I liked this?” I turned to her.”
She shrugged. “People talk.”
Over the years that turn of phrase meant judgement when it was usually spoken, here it simply meant someone had been paying attention.
The room filled gradually. Rosaline managed the arrival of everything with her customary efficiency. She only came to meet me when everybody had settled down.
“I’m downstairs if you need me,” she said.
Then she went, I understood her exit as being trusted to handle my bridal shower the way I saw fit.
Someone asked, during a lull in conversation, who my maid of honor was.
Oh shit! I hadn’t thought about that a maid of honor was a close friend or relative who knew you best or more than others. I looked around, I was just beginning to know these people.
My gaze settled on Andrea. “Andrea.”
She turned from the conversation she’d been having.

“Me?” she said.

She stared at me for a moment. Then she reached into her bag and brought out a notebook and a pen.
“. I’ll need your dress measurements by tomorrow. Who will be in charge of the rehearsals? Do you have someone on the catering confirmation or is that still open? Because if it’s open Ican-”
The room laughed.
“That is why”
Andrea looked up from the notebook. “You chose me because I make lists?”
“I chose you because you take everything in stride and make it look easy.”
She held my gaze for a moment.
“PROJECT: KEEP DENISE ALIVE UNTIL THE WEDDING,” she said, writing as she spoke.
“Should I be concerned?”
“For you or for me?”
I burst into laughter.
The gifts continued to pile on the table over the afternoon.
I opened each of them solemnly and was silently grateful for them. I had been wary of taking gifts from people because more times than not, they came with strings. This didn’t feel like one of those times.
The gifts were valuable to me because people had chosen them for me. It was a new feeling to process and I was trying my best.
Someone asked whether I was nervous.
“A little,” I said.
“About the ceremony?”
I paused. “Not really about the ceremony. I’ think I’m more nervous about the marriage.”
Everybody turned their attention to me.
“It’s happening faster than I expected.” It was true in more ways than I could explain.
Someone chirped in, saying nobody was ever truly prepared and the conversation steered to another direction.
But the question that arrived next came from a different direction and without warning.

“Do you love him?”

The question floored me. I used the silence to process everything that had happened over the past few weeks.
“I don’t know,” I said finally.
The answer rattled more me than a positive or negative answer would have. I was someone who valued clarity regardless of the situation but there was nothing clear about this.
Nobody pressed me and the conversation moved on.
