They arrived within twenty minutes of each other which told me they had talked about coming within a timeframe.

They all came in with packages: Callum carried a flat and heavy box. Reyes seemed pleased with himself as he carried a bag. Maddox had a framed rectangle wrapped in paper and Jayce carried a box under his

arm.

I had expected banter and being made the butt of all marital jokes they could think of but I didn’t think they would be this mindful of the marriage to go this extent.

Denise came out of the hallway when she heard them. She looked at them for a while, longer than was necessary. I could tell she wasn’t expecting them much less their gifts but she covered her surprised quickly before anyone could see it. Well, anyone except me.

“You didn’t have to do this,” she said.

Reyes smiled. “Of course. We wanted to.”

Callum went first.

He set the package on the table and let her open it without explanation.

She opened it and brought a bundle of legal documents that had been read through and had some sections marked carefully. There were annotations in the margins concerning nonprofit governance and charitable trust structures, notes in different ink where Callum had apparently added his own

observations.

Callum added with a hint apology. “The regulations changed twice in the last eighteen months. The current edition doesn’t reflect either amendment fully. I was able to mark where the gaps are.”

Denise with a gasp she could barely suppress. “How did you know?”

“I asked Rosaline and she was very helpful.”

Denise turned another page; She was actually reading.

Callum had asked Rosaline what she did for a living and had taken the time and effort to procure and annotate legal documents that would make her work easier while I lived with her and had done nothing.

The thought didn’t sit with me well.

Reyes handed his bag over with a mischievous twinkle in his eyes.

Denise reached into it, and whatever she found made her start laughing before she had fully removed it.

I had no idea what it was but I concluded it was an inside joke.

I found myself watching her laugh, realizing how it changed her face and how I had started looking forward to seeing that spectacle she created when she laughed.

Maddox presented his with ceremony.

The frame was good quality. Enclosed in it was the Grand Aldric staircase, the Aura Phoenix/visible in the upper corner, the light that evening right on the money. It was a genuinely beautiful commemoration of the wallpaper incident.

“For the record, I have forgiven you for wounding me”

Denise looked at him. “I wasn’t aware you were injured.”

“Only just my pride.”

She laughed again and stared at the photograph.

I watched the laughter give way to something more solemn. “It’s beautiful.”

Maddox, who had been preparing for extended performance, simply nodded.

Jayce handed his box over without preamble. Denise opened it, identified what it was, and thanked him.

Jayce said, “You’ll use it.”

Denise said, “I will.”

“Good.”

I had known Jayce for a decade and by his standards that was a huge expression of care. Denise must have guessed so because she thanked him a second time.

I stood slightly apart while all of this happened as I watched her. As the day wore on, she asked Callum a specific question concerning his notes, she teased Reyes about his gift and she showed Maddox where she would hang the photograph. She thanked Jayce again and he seemed surprised by her gratitude.

My mind somehow went back to the airport. I knew that Dante had taken a picture and without fail sent it to Denise. All week I had waited for her to confront me but she never did. She was doing what she had always done; Waiting till she knew more before she made any move.

She knew more than I had told her. She was simply waiting for me to tell her the rest which I hadn’t gotten around to.

After the others drifted toward the kitchen, I went to her.

“Your friends are very kind,” she said.

“They like you,” I said.
