The security arrangements was brought in at eight by James. Callum’s legal amendments arrived by nine and Marcus had the political implications spelt out before I’d finished my second coffee, I was torn between being impressed by his efficiency and being worried that the situation was this predictable.
I read everything, signed everything that needed my signature and approved what needed my approval I rejected two requests from council members who masked their grab for power behind subtle shifts in administrative duties and hoped I wouldn’t catch it but I did.
“These two go back,” I told Callum.
“They won’t be happy.”
“They weren’t going to be happy regardless. Now they know I can read in between the lines too.”
He took them without further comment. The work on my table was familiar. I knew what to do with them and what to expect. I stared at the wedding dossier on my table and had no idea what I was getting into. The invitation list had been adjusted three times and still no closer to being resolved.
I had carried out tougher negotiations and political campaigns that had little chance of succeeding without so much as a sweat but this ceremony had my heart thumping with a frenzy that I found unsettling.
It wasn’t fear, apprehension felt more or less the right word.
Aldric had a good week. I wasn’t counting on it and it was a welcomed surprise.
He attended two of the pre-wedding events and stayed longer than anyone expected, including Rosaline who hovered around him and found out that it was unnecessary.
He argued with her about about the seating arrangement; it was a dispute no practical consequence but he made his case with the energized certainty of a man who had opinions and intended to express them.
I considered that an excellent sign.
At one point during the event I watched him talking with two of the older pack members, men who had known him for decades. He looked tired unlike five years ago but when he was present, I could still see the fire behind his eyes, the same intensity that had driven him all those years.
He had told me, weeks ago, that Denise was the right one. I didn’t argue with him because he had an instinct and an uncanny ability to read people that was almost always right.
Now, barely some days to the wedding I understood what he had seen. It wasn’t something cosmic like the right one or all of that metaphysical concepts but something specific. Character.

I opened the folder with her name was on the cover. The investigation I had authorised had been liberately narrow because anything more than this would have made it become surveillance.
She had been making anonymous donations to St Mira. She had paid the medical procedure for a child when she couldn’t afford it and never breathed a word of it to another soul.
She kept the visiting on Sundays because there were children who remembered her, and she hadn’t decided that her own changed circumstances made that irrelevant.
I closed the file and rested my face on my interlocked knuckles. The dossier made me see her in a different light that I found troubling at the same time. I knew all too well the reason it bothered me.
My mind moved, as it kept moving, to Eli.
I sighed as I remembered the Eli’s weight against my shoulder and his face buried in my neck as he sobbed, the promise I made to him and the lengths I had gone to keep this part of my life separate from the rest. I told myself it had been necessary once.
Denise was a few days from becoming my wife, and she knew almost everything about me except the thing that mattered most.
The contract said one thing but reality had become something else.
Rosaline found me in the study. She sat across from me and gave me the look she gave when she already knew the answer to the question she was about to ask.
“Have you told her?” she said.
I didn’t ask who she meant. “No.”
I would have preferred outrage but she kept her tone flat. “You said you would.”
“I will.”
“When?”
I didn’t answer immediately.
“You keep saying that,” she said.
“I know,”
She held my gaze. “Then stop saying it. marriage shouldn’t start like this.”
She left without waiting for a response. Later I went to the hallway outside her room.
I stood there for several seconds.
The door was closed and the lights were out. I could knock; it wouldn’t have been the first time. I had stood outside that door and asked whether she needed anything, telling myself that the conversation about Eli was coming.
