Rosaline stood in the doorway flanked by two attendants behind her and the expression she wore wher had information and had enjoyed withholding it more than was strictly necessary.
Whenever I had asked about the dress, I had gotten received the same response. You’ll see it when you see
“Finally,” Rosaline said.
I looked at her. “Finally what?”
“I can stop lying to you.”
Andrea laughed from the sofa. “She has been unbearable.”
Rosaline glared at her. “The word you are looking for is disciplined.”
“You threatened me when I almost opened the storage room.”
“I said you will regret having hands if you did.”
“Case in point.”
I smiled and realized with a start how easy it came. Few weeks before now, I would have been calculating my exit rather than joking around.
I turned my attention to the garment bag that the attendants were unzipping, Rosaline watching my face intently to see my reaction.
I had no idea what was I looking at. Subconsciously, I had been expecting an elaborate wedding gown but this was completely off the direction my expectation went. The ivory hue stood out, it was a fitted bodice with a simple decoration. The skirt fell in layers that looked weightless from across the room and the back was open in a way that was elegant without becoming something else.
There were tiny hand sewn details around the waist that were noticed if you looked hard enough. The dress as a whole commanded attention not a part of it which was the ultimate compliment to the dress.
“Well?” Rosaline said.
I took a moment. “It’s beautiful.”
She smiled. “I know. The designer said it should look like you.”
“She doesn’t know me.”

Rosaline held my gaze. “But I do.”

Something caught in my throat as I stared at the dress. The room changed once I stepped behind the screen. Rosaline adjusted the shoulders as the attendants made small corrections with practiced/hands. I
watched it in the mirror.
Soon. I was still processing everything, the date, venue, and traditions has been
yet it still didn’t feel real.
Marriage. Kieran. Husband. It didn’t matter the time of the day but the those words never failed to elicit some strange response from my nervous system when I thought of them.
Rosaline stepped back. “Look.”
I turned to the mirror to see the image that everybody would see at the wedding courtesy of the attendants, Rosaline and the designer.
“Don’t look at the dress.”
I glanced at her through the mirror.
“Look at yourself,” she said.
I turned back to my face, my shoulders, the posture I was holding and realized the dress wasn’t the remarkable thing in the mirror.
That realization was more unsettling than any dress could have been. Andrea who had been talking since we arrived had gone completely quiet.
“Andrea?”
She didn’t respond.
“Andrea.”
She blinked. “Oh.”
“You’ve gone quiet. Here I was thinking you would talk through the apocalypse.”
She walked closer and looked at me in the mirror. “You look like someone who finally believes she is allowed to be here.”
I looked away and the door opened.
Mrs. Adeyemi stopped when she saw me.
A moment passed. Then she made the face I had known since childhood.
“Don’t,” I said.

She smiled. “I haven’t said anything.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I know.”
She crossed the room, her hands trembling as she ran her fingers along the length of the fabric. “Beautiful.”

My throat tightened as I looked back at the mirror and myself in a smaller room where the walls retained the cold rather than keeping it out and thin blankets that were shared for warmth.
I had learned early that wanting things was the fastest route to disappointment so I wanted practical things instead: Food and a room with a door that locked from the inside. These were the things that could be depended upon.
I thought about the girl who had lived inside that logic for years. She would have found this impossible and she would be right.
She would also have been wrong also because impossible things were sometimes only things you had not survived long enough to reach.
Mrs. Adeyemi stood beside me. “You are thinking too much.”
“That’s what I do.”
“I know, don’t think about whether you deserve it or not”
I looked at her. “Deserve what?”
She gestured at the room. “Any of it. You have spent too much time proving that you deserve to exist.”
It landed precisely because it was true.
She took my hand and held it. “I want you to just exist.”
Everyone left eventually. Andrea told me she had updated the list so I could get some sleep as she left, Rosaline gave me a look that told me everything she wanted to say.
