My body stiffened as I heard his voice. I couldn’t make out his words but my body knew that particular rise and fall of his tone. I was standing besides Rosaline still a washed in the aftermath of the mating bond that didn’t feel deal if I was being honest.

Then as clear as day, Dante’s voice broke through and the entire church went silent. Everybody eyes was at the entrance. I could feel that specific rage, the kind that is protective when a threat looms, from Kieran through the bond. He started to move but I held his arm.

“I’ll handle this.”

He turned to me with an objection that was clear as the intricate details on the waist of my gown.

He looked at my face and finally agreed. “James will be there.”

“I expected nothing less.”

His face was still blank but I felt the tiniest flicker of a smile.

The corridor outside felt brighter than the reception room. James was already there, standing between Dante and the entrance like someone who just needed an excuse to put Dante on his behind.

Dante was still arguing. “I need to speak to her..

“You had all the time in the world.”

“Move.” Dante growled

“Or else?”

Dante stopped talking as I stepped into view.

He looked different, like he was adjusting to a different scenario than he had anticipated. I saw the pause and the subtle bulge of his eyes as he looked me over. He realized the same thing any wolf within ten feet of me would.

“I’m mated now,” It was a statement that was totally without anything

in it.

He stared at me. “Denise…”

I continued without giving him a chance to say something. “I hope things work out with Elena.”

The flinch told me that my sincerity gave him a huge blow.

Chapter 117

“You should have waited,” he managed to croak.

No I wish you had. He had thought he could pause and start my life with a button or I couldn’t take a step without his input.

“Why?” I asked.

He moved closer. “Because what we had-”

“Ended before I ever spoke to Kieran.”

“That’s not true.”

“You know it is.”

He shook his head. I already knew what he was going to say next, not the exact words but the intent of the whatever he was going to say.

“This is a performance. He’s doing this to-”

“It was never about you. It hasn’t been about you in a long time. That’s the part you keep missing.”

He grabbed my wrist like physical touch would break through my defense to accommodate him like before.

I removed his hand, stepped back and looked at him.

Then with all the calm in me, “Don’t.”

He stared at his hand. “You belonged to me.”

Staring at him, I recalled numerous dinners when he didn’t show because he deemed other things more important and I finally realized that he wasn’t grieving what we’d had. What he wanted back was the version of me that waited for him to choose me.

“You watched your family make it clear I wasn’t one of them and you said nothing but you expected me to wait anyway.”

“That’s not-”

“And when you walked away that day. I stopped waiting.”

There was no theatrics to my words, it was just what it was, a factual timeline of when our relationship ended,

He was quiet for a while, “This marriage won’t last.”

“That may be true.” I said.

“He doesn’t love you.”

“That maybe true too.”

He was fishing for a way in and when I didn’t give him any, he gave up.

“The bond doesn’t change what we had,”

I held his gaze. “There’s nothing left to change.”

James arrived with two others as I stepped aside.

Dante kept talking while they escorted him. You’ll regret this. This isn’t real and finally, this isn’t over.

I stood in the corridor long after he had been taking away, trying to understand what I felt. It wasn’t triumph, satisfaction but a quiet feeling of being complete.
