That was the strangest part. For the larger part of some weeks I had been looking for answers to questions I didn’t want to acknowledge and ignoring certain answers to obvious questions my head asked
concerning the wedding.
Now I was standing in the room we had chosen together where the light came in through the west window and bathed everything in illumination.
The humans could only see one aspect of the wedding ceremony while the wolves saw something older. It was becoming obvious I belonged to the latter rather than the former.
Kieran stood beside me. He hadn’t given a second glance ever since I joined him at the altar. Earlier as I approached the altar, he had given me a look which said he was done fighting whatever he was fighting and accepting what comes with the marriage.
I didn’t know what to do with that yet. So I stood beside him and let the ceremony begin.
The scent exchange was first.
I had read up on it and even Rosaline’ explanation didn’t leave me satisfied. Intellectually, it was the biological equivalent of exchanging rings.
Understanding it intellectually didn’t prepare me for the reaction my body had to his scent.
My wolf went quiet and the silence surprised me, I noticed the low hum of alertness that I had stopped noticing because it was constant and my mind stopped registering it.
My breathing changed as my skin heated up. Somewhere underneath my skins, I recognized him without meaning to do so.
The thought arrived and sat in my head with the other facts and discovery about his secrets, there was enough space for them to exist without trying to drown the other.
I watched Rosaline from across the room as she moved through the venue from the corner of her eyes; she never tried to make me feel like a project.
Now she was crying and I realized she had been preparing me for more than wedding.
Aldric rose to his feet and it drew a sharp intake of air from Kieran. I followed his glance and the slight change on his face told me he understood how big a sacrifice his dad was making.
Kieran looked away from his father before I could read his full expression so I wasn’t sure how much of what unfolded that I was seeing.

Jayce shifted in his seat and the sudden stiffness told me his portrayal of calm was the enormous effort.
The elder’s voice changed register as the air in the room changed. The elder completed the ritua).
I felt Kieran’s presence differently as the bond between our primal sides began to form gradually. We inhaled at the same when it was done.
He had been a steadying presence in his own, over the past few weeks. I felt the weight of his reaction to the bond the way you feel weather before it arrives.
He was relieved the way something that had been unresolved quickly became unresolved/Something in me had been braced for years of loneliness but for the first time that I didn’t have to be anymore.
The contract had a date. This didn’t.
I had entered the marriage looking for an exit already only to realize while in the middle of it I didn’t want one anymore, the realization was enough to throw me off a bit. Kieran looked at me.
He reached up and touched my face briefly, he didn’t say anything but he didn’t need to. The bond spoke in very clear terms. He had wanted this not the alliance, the council’s approval, nor the political resolution. He had just wanted me. The information arrived through the bond clearly as and I received it warily, like a kid who was handed an object with far more seriousness than he was used to.
The room became alive. Someone make a joke and the entire room including Rosaline laughed. The musicians picked up the music again. The pack understood that the bond had been sealed which meant the ceremony was complete and all of the weight that had hung heavily in the room could now be dissipated.
For a few seconds, everything was perfect.
I was still finding my footing in the sensation of the bond when the door opened too hard for my liking. The air carried the sound of voice and footsteps laced with urgency.
The nearest guests turned first, followed by the council; I felt Kieran’s attention travel before I saw his face
move.
The bond carried it.
The warmth didn’t disappear but there was a cold efficiency underneath the warmth. I quickly recognized it as the zone Kieran entered when controlling something he hadn’t anticipated.
I could feel it and that was the first real lesson of what the bond meant. I turned toward the doors.
People were moving towards the source of the commotion. I heard voices in the doorway, someone being stopped by the security as the musicians stopping playing mid-phrase. The room that had been celebrating had become confused in the space of ten seconds.
Kieran’s hand tightened around mine.
The bond carried something across the distance between us before I could read his face. I felt the fear rush and enveloped me as his tightened me around me. It took a second to register it wasn’t mine but his
