The university had three application pathways and I hadn’t made a choice in almost forty minutes.

It was a clash of priorities. The first pathway suited me personally, the second suited my foundation schedule and the last was the most intensive academically.

I was weighing the pros and cons of each pathway before committing fully to a choice.

My phone was beside the laptop. The screen lit up as it vibrated. A message from an unknown number. You think marrying him made you safe.

I read the message twice before I set the phone down. I made a new note detailing the time and number before the message itself before putting the phone away.

I stared at the screen for thirty seconds before I admitted to myself that my thoughts were elsewhere.

Who could have sent this message?

I thought about Lyra and how she circulated a photograph that Callum ended with two phone calls

Cyrus was the second suspect because of his proximity to Lyra and Kieran was looking into him too as a person of interest in the fire investigation.

I didn’t conclude because a text message was too small a sample to become an evidence of any thing. Besides the message was too short to make out a definitive suspect especially when people out there had enough compelling motive to act.

I opened the folder on my phone and saved the message there. The folder had started like a journal of some sorts regarding things I didn’t know how to handle and has now become a catalogue of evidence.

The study door was closed; I could hear Kieran working through it, he had gone in there a little while after he made breakfast for me.

I looked at the door, thought about knocking and then saying ” someone sent me this, I don’t know who and I wanted you to know.”

I thought about the snowball effect it would have had just three days into this marriage and I shook the idea out of my head.

I had spent the last several months becoming someone in this house rather than something and telling him about this flimsy attempt at scaring me would just undo the whole progress I’ve made,

It might also not be real and if I escalated every intimidation attempt made to unsettle me, I would have accomplished the objective of the sender.

I returned to the university pathway and finally the second pathway. The second message arrived twenty

minutes later.

Everyone you protect is still reachable.

The message stopped me dead in my tracks.

The sender had been watching me or knew me enough to realize that threatening the people/I care about most would be more effective than if they had threatened me.

I recorded the time and details of the second message in the folder. I noticed the number was different so either two burners or senders. The interval between the message suggested a kind of coordination based on my response to the first message.

The people I protected: Mrs. Adeyemi, The children at St. Mira’s and the people who depended on the foundation programs.

The sender knew me well enough to know the button to push. My gaze went towards the direction of the study again.

My phone vibrated as another message came. This time there wasn’t any text but an attachment. I opened it and it was a picture of St. Mira’s front door.

I looked at it for a long time with my breath stuck in my throat. Whoever it was had my undivided attention now.

I stared at the building I had lived in for years, the step that had been repaired twice and still had a hairline crack running along the near edge.

Then I found the detail that stopped my breathing.

The window beside the entrance was Mrs. Adeyemi’s office window. It had a small dark-leafed plant in a terracotta po. Mrs. Adeyemi told me about it two weeks before the wedding. While we were going over the wedding itinerary, she had shown me a picture of the plant and said the light in that corner of the office was perfect for it.

Someone had stood at St. Mira’s front gate recently enough to photograph a plant that had been there for two weeks.

This was a door I had walked through thousands of times, at a gate where children played in the afternoon, at a window where a woman I loved went to work every morning and someone had been there with malicious intention.

I set the phone down on the table and my hands were completely still. I looked at the laptop screen with a calm countenance that was closer to crippling fear.

Pathway two, I had decided because it was the one that suited the foundation work.

The foundation. Dependents on the education programs. Mrs. Adeyemi’s plant on her windowsill.

I picked up the phone and looked at the photograph again.
