I woke up and saw my clothes were in the wardrobe already. That was the first thing I noticed before the dent on the side of the bed where Kieran had been.

My clothes were in the wardrobe with his and our phones were on the same nightstand. It seemed the room had already decided what I was still working out.

The bond registered Kieran before I heard him. I heard his controlled voice sounding from the direction of the study. He was probably on a phone call. I satu still for a moment as I tried to process the feeling. Since the wedding and specifically, the bond ritual, I still couldn’t wrap my head around the sensation of another person existing inside my awareness without triggering my vigilance or instinct to run.

Tossing that thought aside, I got up and made coffee.

The laptop was exactly where I left it two days ago. I opened it while the coffee brewed and found the school applications still in progress in three tabs.

There was an email concerning the foundation from an investment review committee, three documents and unread mails from the legal team the day before the wedding.

I sat at the table with my coffee and began working. I started working on the school application two weeks ago but I got stuck at the essay section. It asked when I knew or my reason for choosing the course I did. I wrote a version that was true and moved on to the recommendation form.

I opened the email from investment review committee, the documents were straightforward. It was simply a question of allocation that required a decision, some compliance filings and an outreach report from the education program.

My mind wandered to the contract while I reviewed the compliance report.

The terms were still there; we had set the terms and then the mating happened. While it didn’t dissolved the agreement; it changed the nature of it but the obligations of the contract were still binding and I

intended to honor it.

I went back to the filing but I realized there was a problem I hadn’t accounted for. Before the wedding I had an idea what the keeping the terms of the contract entailed: keeping distance and ensuring a

\ functional partnership for our benefits. Now we were bonded and it meant the total erasure of the

distance required to make the contract work.

So what exactly was I fulfilling, then?

I shrugged my shoulders and returned to the filing which was the only thing I was certain of at the

moment.

Kieran appeared from the study and stopped when he saw me at the table. He had the look of a man who had stumbled into a situation that was totally possible but still had no plan its arrival.

Chapter 122

Yesterday had vows and crowd to distract us from our new reality but none of that was here now.

“You’re already working,”

“The foundation filing was due Friday so had to move it.”

He went into the kitchen and heard the sound of pouring as he poured himself a cup. Then he leaned against the counter, staring at me, “You don’t have to start today.”

“I know.”

A beat. “That’s all you’ve got?”

“Nobody’s making me do it. That’s the point.”

He was quiet for a moment. He looked like he wanted to argue for a minute and then decided against it, which I appreciated.

“What else?” he asked.

“School applications. There’s an essay I’ve been avoiding.”

“What’s the prompt?”

“When did you decide what you wanted to study?”

He considered this. “And you’ve been avoiding it because…”

“The honest answer requires more context than they’re asking for.”

He sat down across me. He had his coffee and he didn’t reach for his phone when a message came in which almost never happened.

“Is that separate from your own applications or are they the same?”

“They are separate. I want the education qualifications for my own work. The foundation is already funded so I’m just reviewing what we’re doing with it.”

“We?”

I looked up.

“The foundation I mean,”

“You said we.”

I didn’t know I said it as focus my attention on my laptop. He didn’t make more of it, which I also appreciated.

I looked at Kieran briefly while he was reading something on his phone.

He didn’t know I was watching him. I saw his eyes run calculations as he read whatever it was on his phone and it’s wasn’t the distracted attention he paid whatever he was ready. The bond made me completely sure of that. He was processing the information and still hadn’t made up his mind about how next course of

action.

I thought about Eli and then about Kieran besides me after our wedding.
