Chapter 125

The report was already on the table when I came in.

James and the investigator – Soren, who had been handling the technical side of the inquiry since the firs week – were both present. Neither spoke when I entered. They had learned, over years and a different number of investigations, that I preferred to sit and read before anyone told me what to think about what I was reading.

I sat.

I read.

Then I looked up.

“Tell me about the compound,” I said.

Soren opened the secondary folder. “It wasn’t selected for combustion efficiency. There are cheaper accelerants that would have produced the same fire. This was chosen for what it does to wolves specifically.” He set a page in front of me. “When inhaled in sufficient concentration, it disrupts olfactory function. Scent tracking. Directional instinct. The basic navigational abilities a wolf uses to escape a burning structure.”

I looked at the page.

“She couldn’t have found her way out the way another wolf would,” I said.

“Correct. The compound would have disorientated those responses within the first minute. Any wolf relying on natural tracking instincts to locate an exit or avoid smoke concentration would have found those instincts actively working against them.”

I set the page down.

Someone had understood enough about what Denise was to construct a specific method for preventing her from surviving it. That was not an impulsive crime. It was not a generalized attack. It was targeted with precision, which required knowledge, and knowledge of that kind didn’t come from outside the world we occupied.

} “Continue,” I said.

The supply chain took fifteen minutes to walk through.

The levels of intermediaries used and the effort put into making they weren’t easily discoverable left it clear that this wasn’t the work of an amateur but the signature of a seasoned professional who had done this a few times.

“The last intermediary fell off the radar nine days after the fire and hasn’t resurfaced since.”

“Did you mean eliminated or clean up?” I said.

“I can’t say for certain but so far there has no been evidence to suggest elimination.”

James came to a conclusion. “Someone cleaned behind themselves.”

Soren agreed. “Whoever did this assumed there will be an investigation and made no sure to leave no loose ends.”

I thought about the fact that someone had understood an investigation would happen and made sure it stopped at a certain place.

“Who is capable of creating a network like this?”

Soren considered. “someone with resources for a start, this channels don’t come cheap/someone who had knowledge of wolves existence and biology, and had enough insulation to ensure whatever fallout from the case can be managed.”

The first and second criteria included a lot of families but with the third criteria, the list shrank in my head. The number of families that had the influence to manage a fallout of that proportion was very few.

I looked up at the last sentence and turned my gaze to the window. A name came to mind but I refused to say it out loud. I began thinking of what I already knew.

Her motive was as clear as daylight, always has been. Cyrus was an established connection of hers.

She was a wolf that was pack-raised.

She had become very quiet after the fire. Most people become louder after a public failure but then people tend to be quiet and deliberate when they felt watched.

“When did she agree to meet Marco Marchetti?”

James checked, told me the date and I mulled it over in my head.

The introduction had existed before the fire but the follow-up had been days after the fire, after it had become public knowledge Denise had survived.

It wasn’t enough but it was sure one big coincidence.

“We could bring her in if only to twist her arm.”

“No,” I said.

He looked at the report. “She’s already tried once.”

“Then make absolutely sure that she doesn’t try again. I’m not going after her with what is circumstantial evidence at best,”

James was quiet for a moment.

“Increase her security protocols but it shouldn’t affect her movement. She will argue against it but it has to

be done.”

“I’ll see to it today.”

“And I want round the clock surveillance on Cyrus.”

“Understood.”

I looked at the investigator. “Keep looking into the accelerant, it definitely came from somewhere.”
