I was looking for the amended filing for the foundation. Kieran had mentioned some days to the wedding that the original document needed a countersignature from the Nightshade legal department. I remembered while doing the compliance and decided to check the study for the document before I messaged them.

The study was quiet. Documents were stacked some sequence of logic I haven’t figured out yet. It wasn’ among that set of documents so I checked the drawers. The first set of drawers on the left side was empty so I moved towards the right side.

In the second drawer, I found a folder that looked out of place there. It must have been recently moved and kept there temporarily before it was secured in a more permanent place.

I pulled it out because the label was obscured and I needed to see whether it was the filing agreement.

I opened it and it wasn’t. It was a picture of Kieran, Alyssa and a child that was taken in the moment. There was no performance that could match the intimacy that beamed out of that picture.

The ambience, architecture and clothing of people in the background told me this was probably a city

abroad.

I have spent weeks telling myself I didn’t know the whole picture but I did now.

He wasn’t looking at a child he was charitable too. The total attention in his eyes and inclination of his head totally screamed he had barely registered the presence of the camera that captured the moment.

I put the photograph back, closed the folder and returned it where I found it.

I remained still as I tried to process what I had just seen before I moved.

I took a deep breathe, not of shock but as a confirmation of something I had suspected since I saw the hospital clip as my coffee got cold.

I would have been shocked if I was wrong but I wasn’t.

I remembered the hospital corridor and the small arms that reach for Kieran, his milky scent and the scent of Alyssa on his collar.

The scene at the airport where Eli buried his face into Kieran’s neck as he cried goodbye.

The phone call he received and told me it was a friend who was getting home after a successful surgery and now this one.

Everything kept pointing to one direction but I kept searching as if any new answers would change the story clearly written. I didn’t want that story to be true because it would mean asking questions I wasn’t yet ready to learn their answers.

Kieran was Eli’s father, Alyssa was his mother and I was the woman who he married. To hate or blame Eli

as too be small and I didn’t have it in me besides it’s not like he had any choice in the matter.

My mind went back to the original contract, we had made it clear what we required from each other and what we didn’t.

I had read every clause but I couldn’t remember seeing any clause about what Kieran’s life contained.

I had signed an agreement I didn’t understand and made decisions from the assumption that Kieran had told me about relevant things I needed to have known before I signed the contract.

I had inhaled Alyssa’s scent, watched the video and said nothing.

I had saved Dante’s photograph in the folder I had created on my phone and made space for an explanation that hadn’t been offered.

I had undergone a bonding ritual with him while he held back this information.

He had let me choose him while he chose what I needed to know.

The bonded shifted. The room became warmer and I felt the warmth beneath my ribs and it had asked no permission.

Kieran was home I remained where I was.

I was still getting used to the information seeking the bond did without my consent as it reached him. . Kieran was somewhere in the penthouse and I was in his study. The gap between us measured by something that didn’t account for what I had found in the drawer.

I could feel that he was home but I couldn’t feel why he delayed in telling me.

I was not going to ask whether Eli was his son, I knew the answer to that. What I wanted was a truth volunteered and not an confession to the question I would have asked.

I wanted to know whether he was going to volunteer it.

I wanted to know whether the man I had mated believed I deserved to know the whole of him.
