Chapter 130

Denise POV

Another message came when I was making my morning coffee.

It was the fifth one. I had been noting the patterns without meaning to. Old habits really died hard.

You do look good in blue.

I dropped the cup of coffee never taking my eyes off the screen.

I had a private meeting with some of the foundation executives on Wednesday. It was a small meeting and

I had been driven from the penthouse to the office and back without making any pit stop but someone had seen me.

I doubted but I still went online to check there was no media coverage of that meeting or of me circulating online so it meant someone had been close enough to see what I was wearing.

I picked it up and screenshotted the message and added it to the private folder. I opened a document and read through the messages.

The fourth message had arrived after a couple of days and I had noted that.

How does it feel, belonging somewhere for once? That message made me unsettled more than the rest because the sender knew me well enough ask that question.

I stood at the counter and read the entire document again.

The pattern was there. It was a random harassment or threats. Each message escalated the threat to me. The first one said I could be reached, the second explicitly said the people I loved could be reached. The third message told me they knew my history, the fourth was they understood me enough to know my state of mind and the last one made it clear that my physical movements could be observed.

This was clearly the blueprint of somebody building to an final attack. The sender was someone with enough patience and strategy and my mind went to Lyra. She knew as much as anyone and could be behind the first few messages but I didn’t think she was involved in the last one. Because the last message required active surveillance. She might have hired guys to watch me but something didn’t sit right with the whole arrangement.

Cyrus was another person I could think of. He had the connections and had operated on someone else’s behalf.

But the fourth message – how does it feel, belonging somewhere for once? This person who I was before I got married.

I took a mental note of it before calling James,

He answered on the second ring.

“I’ve been getting threats over the last few days. The last one told me the dress I wore to a private meeting

sterday and there had been no media coverage of the meeting online.”

There was a brief silence on the phone as he processed everything. “Send me everything.”

“Already done. I sent you a link.”

“Of course you did.” I heard him opening something on his end. “How long have you been building the file?”

“Since the first message.”

He sighed. “And you’re just telling me now because of the dress?”

“I’m telling you now because someone was close enough to me physically, when I was supposed to be secure. The rest of the messages could have been done remotely but the last one wasn’t.”

“Correct. The fourth message sounds really specific.”

“Yes.”

“This narrows down the list of suspects considerably.”

“My thoughts exactly.” I said.

“I’ll take a look at this and cross reference it with your movements over the last few weeks.

He paused a bit. “Can I ask a question?”

“Go ahead.”

“Is there anyone who knows you well enough to do this?”

I thought about that for a moment. “Possibly.”

“I’ll need names eventually.”

“I know but I’ll need some time before I mentioned the wrong names.”

He accepted that without comment. “Don’t change your routine. Let whoever it is still assume he or she is still in charge.”

“I want to be kept informed. I want to know whatever you find”

“I understand.”

“And James, one other thing. I haven’t told Kieran yet.”

The pause was different this time around. “That’s your decision.”

“I’m going to tell him when I know more and not before.”

He paused again, weighing what I said. “I understand. You’ll hear from me by tomorrow.”

I sat at the table after the call with the document open in front of me.
