Chapter 129

Elena POV

I watched the video countless times and I barely understood what I was looking at.

The first time I watched the video I was in denial. I refused to believe it was him, I told myself it was probably somebody that looked like him. The second time I watched the video, I had no doubt it was him, by the third time, I was watching with rapt attention to fully understand what he was up to.

The footage showed a wedding in full swing with guests in full festivities and then a commotion at the door, and the footage went outside. Dante from what it looked like was arguing with Denise and when she left, took it badly to put it mildly. I turned it off when he started screaming her name.

The calls started within the hour.

Irina called first, probably so she could frame her reason for calling as concern rather than curiosity. Her calling first, meant she had sent the video. She asked how I was and I told her I was fine.

Petra called ten minutes later. She asked if I had seen the video and I said yes. She went silent and her silence said all the words that she didn’t say.

By the fourth call I stopped answering.

I sat on my sofa staring at the phone, watching it ring severally. I know all over the city, people watching the video had the same question in their heads.

The same questions I had been not been asking for months.

Then Mara sent a message rather than calling. Is the engagement still on?

I turned the phone face-down on the cushion only to pick up again twenty minutes later and played the footage a fourth time.

This time I didn’t watch Denise.

I had spent the first few times watching Denise who dismissed Dante’s interruption like a logistical inconvenience rather than an emotional disruption.

This time my eyes were on Dante.

His face held no desperation even when he was blocked by security. He had the quiet insistence of a man who believed the outcome could still be negotiated.

He believed she could still be reached, that her decision wasn’t set in stone and he had enough gravitas to change the course of her decision.

He had directed that at me in small moments. It felt amazing that the right argument at the right moment could alter my decision. I found it totally repulsive now I saw it directed at someone who had told him,,

publicly and without qualms, that she had stopped waiting.

I set the phone down again.

My hands didn’t tremble like I thought they would. I felt calmer than I had ever been in my life as I came to the realization that I had been avoiding: Dante had not chosen me.

He had arrived at me while still facing another direction.

I got up and went to the kitchen sink and stared into the blank space as I gripped the counter. I recalled how I had explained away his moods because I thought he was working towards the same picture I had in mind.

I had been patient waiting for him and he had been at Denise Nightshade’s wedding trying to convince not to go through with her marriage.

I stood there for a while and my mind went to Denise. I felt something dark moving through me. Denise was the reason for all this, if she didn’t exist, Dante wouldn’t be head over heels over her waiting for her to look in his direction.

I watched the video four times and the four times Denise always walked out on him. She had rejected him and Dante had followed her anyway.

I was furious but I couldn’t direct the anger to him because it would mean facing the truth I had been avoiding.

That was the simpler truth.

I couldn’t afford to look at it directly yet. I went back to the sofa and picked up the old phone.’

I had looked at the messages before looking for what he’d done.

Now I read them looking for something else.

I was looking for what Denise didn’t know. I had my doubts but it didn’t derail the thoughts in my head.

Because she had walked back into that reception believing she understood the shape of her marriage. She had stood beside Kieran with the composed certainty of someone who had made a decision and survived the consequences.

Dante had communicated with more people than Denise and some of it had been in texts.

I scrolled slowly before stopping.

I read the same section twice.

Then a third time with that particular certainty that what I had discovered was significant in ways I couldn’t understand yet.

I set the phone on my knee; the information waiting for me to decide what to do with it.
