James entered without knocking and I sat up immediately as he approached my desk. His action told conveyed to me the urgency of the matter.
He knocked quietly when the matter was delicate, he waited for permission after knocking when the matter needed my authorization and he entered without knocking when courtesy was the last thing the situation needed.
He set a folder on the desk. “We got a break. We have a name from the purchase record.”
I opened the folder and there was no flicker of recognition as I stared at the name.
“I don’t know this person.”
“Neither did we. It took three days to uncover anything related to the name.”
“So a false identity?”
“Kind of. The name checks out but the business itself is a single-function entity. It was incorporated eighteen months ago. It was used for a procurement transaction and that was it. It hadn’t done any transaction of that kind since that time.”
I looked at the name again.
“So it was created for a specific purpose.” I said.
“That’s our working theory.”
I looked at the folder. “That requires enough resources to make the documentation credible.”
“Yes.”
I closed the folder. False identity done with such precision never led anywhere useful, unless they had made a mistake and it seemed some good fortune came my way because they did.
The supplier of the chemical compound was a legitimate industrial market shareholder, the first intermediary was a logistics company that checked out and second intermediary had fallen off the radar. The payment was routed through four banks in three different countries before disappearing totally. Almost.
The entire elaborate construction had nearly held but one automated log undid everything.
I took a breath. “Whoever cleaned this knew how to work from the inside but they didn’t know about the external integration because it wasn’t visible from the inside,”
“Correct,”

“So they understand how investigations work.”

James shifted a bit. “We have two scenarios. The people who created the chain had no idea of the external server or the people who did the cleanup was another group.”
A crease appeared on my forehead as I mulled the facts I knew.
Lyra had motive and means but I knew that she wasn’t an accounting person so she must have had hired people and people made mistakes.
This was just the first one.
I opened the public pack records that detailed sanctioned financial transactions and scanned through them. I couldn’t access private banking statements of packs but usually the public declared records were enough to create a pattern that could be used to track any discrepancy.
I found no unusual movement or obvious links between Blackwood entities and chemical sourcing networks.
The absence of evidence changed nothing but rather confirmed that Lyra was too politically sophisticated to leave direct connections.
I looked up. “Tell me everything you know about the Marchetti engagement.”
James had it ready. “Lyra and Marco were finally introduced to each other fourteen months ago. Their second meeting had been six weeks after the fire. The engagement had formally progressed within the last few weeks.
“That’s not coincidence,” I said.
“It could be.”
“The engagement move forward in the last weeks…. after she survived, after the investigations started.”
James considered his words before speaking. “A Marchetti alliance would complicate any move against
her.”
“Work the investigation from all angles. Don’t rule out anything.”
James nodded; he understood the reason for thoroughness.
Soren was waiting in another room. He had company: Rhea, a pack forensic tracker who came in to evaluate the scene. The fire had done enough damage to render anything useless but wolf forensic technique operated differently.
Rhea didn’t wait, “We were able to recover two different scent traces from that room.”
“How different?”
“The first is male and a match for whoever placed the compound. We are still tracing that.”

She opened her own folder. “The second is more interesting. It was a female omega, probably mid-
venties. She was in that room within twelve hours of the fire.”
I looked at her.
Rhea guessed my line of thought. “The scent placed her there but it doesn’t tell her what her intentions were. It just tells us she was there.”
“Can you identify her?”
Rhea paused. “Not yet. There’s a secondary else beneath her natural scent, could be a suppressant or not I can’t tell you what it is precisely.”
I looked at James. A young omega had been present in the storage room at St. Mira’s within twelve hours of the fire and we had no idea who she was or what was she was up to. The arson hadn’t been done from a distance, someone had been there.
“I need another scent to narrow it further.”
“From who?”
She looked at the folder. “whoever you think had reason to be there.”
