I was already awake when the call came in at 2:14 a.m. Eli had been awake and scared, a nightmare of some sort; I had soothed him till he was calm enough to go back to bed.

After I made sure he was asleep, I went to the kitchen and made tea, I wasn’t thirsty but it didn’t feel right staring into the blank space without a drink beside me. The only company I had was the deliberate quiet of a home until my phone lit up on the counter.

It was an unknown number; I watched it ring.

The first call was six nights ago and had lasted seventeen seconds. I had assumed it was a misdial and left it to go to voicemail. The second call had lasted just six seconds and I still left to go to voicemail.

I picked up on the fourth ring and heard nothing. The only thing that I heard was just the steady hum of a person’s breathing. I said nothing and the person breathed for about twenty seconds before the line disconnected.

I noted it down. Third call. Duration: 28 seconds. Deliberate breathing before disconnect.

I looked towards Eli’s room and took in gulps of air.

I spent the next hour making a list; that was my default mode when a situation tried to overwhelm me.

My mother’s family knew where I was but there was absolutely no reason for them to do this. The hospital I had used when Eli was ill was my mother’s maiden name and it would take a deep dive to find that link. There was nothing that connected Kieran and I; I had made sure of it.

Almost all of my old contacts thought I was somewhere else and I did nothing or said nothing to change that opinion.

Kieran and a few persons within Kieran’s private security arrangements knew enough to find me if they

needed to.

The list was uncomfortably short and they people on the list had no motive to be the ones behind it.

I opened Kieran’s contact and just stared at it; I knew exactly what would happen if I called him at this hour.

He would answer before the second ring and listen to me narrate everything before he started making calls and getting the location of the number before the sun rose. He would send a security team to come join me; there was every possibility he would come down here himself and that was something I wanted to

avoid because Kieran was now a married man.

The woman he had married from my findings and opinion was too good for him. I did a deep dive on her expecting to find someone with enough guile and cunning to make Kieran look her way but I found someone who had dedicated herself to children’s welfare while building her own education and helping

people who couldn’t repay her.

She wasn’t what I expected so I had kept my distance. I had let Kieran’s visits to Eli be quiet and did everything to ensure both aspects of his life didn’t meet because she deserved better than that. After all, she had done nothing to wrong me.

Eli was asleep twenty feet away. I looked at Kieran’s contact for another thirty seconds before dropping the phone and reaching for my laptop.

I scoured the dark web skirting among various clandestine media sites that existed with the well known public ones. I checked for possible routing routes and inquiries connected to my identity and searches connected to my mother’s name.

Nothing obvious popped out and then I expanded the timeline.

When had the calls begun? I checked the calendar; the first call came six days after the wedding.

Someone after his wedding began calling me on a number that wasn’t public knowledge to show they can

reach me.

I began cross-referencing.

I learnt that someone had been removed from the reception in the news reels. Dante…Moretti the name rang no bell.

I opened a separate search and did a deep dive on him. I searched his friends, business, family and his known associate.

I looked for overlap.

The third call had come from a number routed through a service that was totally legal but one of the services was linked to a logistics service.

The logistics firm was linked to the to the Moretti family’s commercial activities over the past two years.

It wasn’t proof of anything but a direction to look at.

Someone connected to Dante’s orbit had placed a call that went through his channels to me.

I wrote that down separately and then I asked the harder question.

What was Dante’s goal?

Eli was Kieran’s son who he kept a secret if discovered could be used as a leverage against him and that was all the motive he needed.

It could also be someone using Dante’s obsession with Denise to hide a much darker objective.

I couldn’t yet tell which of those was operating.

I had found Dante’s phone number three searches ago.

I could ask directly but Dante could deny everything with complete composure and I would have handed

m the initiative.

I saved the number and instantly made a decision. I wasn’t going to call either Dante or Kieran tonight,

I decided to wait and see how the situation would develop before I committed myself to any course of

action.

My phone rang. It was an unknown number; I answered immediately.
