Chapter 138

Denise POV

Seven messages in nineteen days.

I had them recorded and printed with the timestamp in chronological order. The digital record I made were back up twice.

Going through them, the escalation was clear.

The first messages had been about presence. Someone was letting me know they existed and they were watching me.

The second batch was them letting me know they knew me intimately enough to know which pressure points to press and that they were close enough to do physical surveillance on me.

The last messages came when I was still in class which confirmed they could tell my location in real time.

Kieran would be home much later in the evening.

I stared at the notebook wondering if I should let him know. I already knew how he would respond:

He would read everything carefully, ask questions to gain clarity he didn’t get from the notes and finally get James to create a security detail for me without my input or permission. Any protest of mine would be countered by him with the logic of precaution and safety.

I would be safe but I would be caged also.

Growing up, I had been told what to do and what to feel by people who had more authority. Kieran would never do that but the security detail and the micromanaging of my schedule in the name of security would make me feel the same way I did in the orphanage.

The last thing I wanted was to become a Luna who needed permission to go for a walk. I had worked too hard to carve out a piece of life that was my own and I wasn’t going to just let somebody take it from with some scare tactics.

I closed the book and sat with my thoughts.

I called James a few days ago and sent him the file I had created. He said I should let him know if anything changes.

I said “I would”

“You will call me before you decide whether it is worth calling me.”

James had clocked my tendency to underestimate situations which in this case would cripple the investigation he was working on.

He had updated me twice about the case. He mentioned the calls were made through numerous proxy

at made tracing difficult which suggested an access to resources that went beyond a single person.

We hadn’t been able to figure out the origin of the resources.

On the desk within my view was the St. Mira’s forensic report that I asked for. I had read it multiple times and almost knew the report word for word.

I now had a much comprehensive idea of the framework that had gone into the attack and I realized it wasn’t what I thought it was.

I kept returning to the scent section of the report that said an omega female was in the storage room hours before the fire started.

Pausing and looking up, I thought about the last few months. Could the fire and threats be linked? Have been thinking of them as the different problems when they weren’t?

Someone went to great trouble to get a compound and hid their tracks well. The compound suggested the person’s knowledge of my kind.

The messages meant someone knew me a great deal to know what St. Mira meant to me and how to track

I thought about Kieran at the hospital and the scents that told me about a private life that he kept secret.

I had assumed the scents were connected to personal life and had left it at that but what if I was wrong?

I looked at the forensic report. Distinctive secondary note.

For someone reason, the words stirred something in me, the way a familiar sensation triggers some kind of déjà vu.

I shook my head. It could be anyone; there was nothing peculiar about that description.

Then I read it again with more concentration than I meant and I noticed something shifted in the air. I felt a primal stirring in my chest. My suppressed wolf was pacing. I could the urgency as it moved inward into my chest; it broke into a run into my memory and I closed my eyes.

The hospital arrived in bits and pieces.

Kieran appeared at the door, his eyes distant, tone measured and the scent arrived. The first was the milk scent of a pup and closely followed by it was the omega’s.

My wolf’s howl was so sudden that my fingers closed around the forensic report instinctively.

I didn’t have a name but my wolf recognized that scent and that was one of the few things more certain than a name.

I knew that scent, all my wolf did was to remind me of it.

I opened my eyes. All these while, my wolf had been quiet through everything only to rise now which told
